Open bonnet lock bracket

On a wet and windy afternoon yesterday, I decided to while away the time making a useful glove box tool for use to keep the open bonnet in position. If the car is parked uphill or in windy conditions, to avoid unnecessary decapitation to oneself or a hapless spectator inspecting the engine, this loc...

Re: What can be done about the low exhaust....

Might not help with raising the ride height, but I have set my ride height quite low and to avoid damage to the main central exhaust box - I have a Hayward and Scott exhaust - welded small ramps made from stainless steel bar from the lowest edge of the front of the box to the exhaust inlet pipes on ...

Re: Differential Gear Oil- GL-5 or GL-4 with additive?

Paul, I’ve done a real quick “google” search tonight and found a potential supplier, but I can’t vouch for them or their stocks. It will be harder to find, but there are plenty of smaller suppliers who could still have it as I can’t believe all the UK stocks have been sold. https://www.vintageandspo...

Re: Differential Gear Oil- GL-5 or GL-4 with additive?

For Layne at Post #4. No problem with Redline “75w90 GL-5”, where that is the specific name on the label, but there are two versions. One is Redline “75w90NS”, which on some on-line forums states that means “No Sulphur” and has no friction modifiers, so I would be wary of using that version as it wo...

Re: Differential Gear Oil- GL-5 or GL-4 with additive?

As there have been no other replies, this is my opinion on those two oils. Both GL-4 and GL-5 are EP, (Extreme Pressure) oils. GL-5 has more EP additives than GL-4 and has a higher shock rating than GL-4. GL-4 gear oils are typically recommended for spur and helical gears such as found in manual tra...

Re: Oil Leak - Sump or rear main?

My two penny worth - where did that saying come from ? Similar concerns and now all sorted : - https://forum.etypeuk.com/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=19921&p=161846#p161846 I am convinced many superficial oil leaks come from the long sump paper type gasket surface area breaking down over time, plus the sump ...

Re: Oil Filter Sealing

I agree that the thinner seal is the one that I use on my Series 1 4.2 engine. In order to seal correctly - as with all oil filters - I put a thin smear of new oil on the new dry rubber seal and ensure the circular base of the filter housing is completely aligned in the groove before only tightening...

Re: How Do You Stay Organized?

Only just seen this post, but in addition to taking loads of digital photos, to answer the question on how I stay organised when I tear assemblies apart is to take a trip to my local supermarket and collect dozens of what I call “banana boxes”. These are long, flat stackable cardboard boxes which fr...

Re: Clutch master cylinder

Sorry to join the party late - and return the post to boring technicality - but another solution giving more durability than a plain aluminium unit, (of whatever manufacturer), which would always remain prone to bore corrosion, is to simply send off the unit to be sleeved in stainless steel. Regards...

Re: Goodwood's 75th.

First off, Chris thanks for the update at #1 and I personally agree about the “pastiches” which Jaguar Classic are producing to a market of potential people with unlimited pockets. We have our “original” cars and share a particular passion which perhaps that market would never relate to. Secondly, a...

Please read my posts #10 and #13 on this previous thread :- https://forum.etypeuk.com/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=12446&p=101005&hilit=Filter#p101005 The main point is that the filter in the glass bowl is fed with fuel from inside to the outside, so the glass bowl remains visually clear of debris, but could...

Re: Oil return hose

Just use two Jubilee Clips on the curved sump pipe. One to seal around just under the top flared pipe diameter and another below to tighten on the lower smaller pipe diameter. The other smaller pipe attached is the Header Tank overflow pipe. This the heavy pretty inflexible oil pipe from SNG Barrett...

Sump oil levels - pictorially !

Following on from my recent post “ “Dry” Engine Oil Capacity ? “ which produced some interesting information and dimensions, I thought I would - (for fun) - use that information to try to envisage the actual oil levels in the sump - which in itself has produced some interesting points. Using the Cro...

Re: “Dry” Engine Oil Capacity ?

Thanks Guys and I am continuing with this post as I have gathered more information from Jaguar sources and Rob Beere Racing and the one thing we all do on our cars is a regular oil change, so this additional information may be of interest. In all my 20 years plus with the E Type I have never accurat...

Re: “Dry” Engine Oil Capacity ?

Ok, so the dipstick has been measured with no major anomalies found. From the “Factory Fit” section :- 1). From cap to top of hash marks....8 and 1/16th of an inch. Mine is 7 and 15/16 inch, but I’m not to concerned on this dimension as it defines a “full marking”. This is the long metal rule taped ...

Re: “Dry” Engine Oil Capacity ?

Thanks guys, I will throughly check my dipstick dimensions and report back. I did note that even after draining out the oil using the sump plug, once the sump was removed there was quite a bit of oil retained in the sump webs and casting areas, so that may affect the overall “new” fill on a car whic...

Re: “Dry” Engine Oil Capacity ?

Hi Christopher, The dipstick photo was taken this morning with engine stone cold, so plenty of time for the oil to settle. I marked the new cut on the dipstick with the engine cold before I set off on my first run out yesterday with 8.5 litres filled of lovely fresh clean 20/50 oil. I showed the two...
