Ask around old skool bodyshops if they can do a DROP CHECK on your car.this will give a very precise measurement .not many people even know what it is or how to do it.

I bought a froniues mig welder new 20 years ago to restore a 356 cabriolet and it still works perfectly.the cheaper machines are mostly throw away junk especially for beginners they will keep blowing fuses and eventually melt the torch and relays.spend a wee bit more and keep it longer !

Upol. do etching primer in aerosols great for small panels.it works the best.

Power washing paint stripper is not a good idea it will end up everywhere.go with the wire brush in a reversible drill.Will work fine.

The larger pipe is the inlet (front) which allows the link pipe to slot inside the silencer.
The smaller pipe (rear) should have the outside dia the same as the inside dia of the front assuming they have used the same tube,one end is expanded.

Check out a single phase hydrovane silent compressor 100/150 litre tank hvlp spray gun and small volume air dryer.job done you can still hear the radio and the kettle !
