Good luck to him. I think he’ll need it.

Re: Early FHC luggage rails

885169 from Factory Fit has a two additional press studs on the L shaped part of the mat. One at the inside corner of the L and another adjacent on the left side edge of the mat. This one appears to be a little further towards the rear of the car unless it’s just the photo. As 885169 is unrestored I...

Early FHC luggage rails

Hi Gents, Today I have finally fitted my luggage rails and rubber inserts. I bought an original set, bar one, at vast expense, about 5 years ago. I’ve had my hardura mat modified from one piece to the, correct for model, two piece type. I had bought bifurcated rivets to attach the rails (retainers) ...

Re: Brake fluid disappeared

Well it didn’t miraculously fix itself of course! The top master cylinder is weeping. I’ll remove it and strip it down. Hopefully I can repair it with a rubber kit rather than replace it but that will, of course, depend on the condition of the bore. I’d like to keep the cylinders matching if possibl...

Re: Brake fluid disappeared

Thanks gents and yes I removed the air cleaner yesterday and noticed fluid had dripped, presumably from one of the the master cylinders, onto the vacuum tank. No damage to my new paint! Fluid bottles are dry as are the flexible hoses. I’ve encountered the dreaded splitting bottles previously. I’ve w...

Brake fluid disappeared

Hi gents, I’ve just noticed hydraulic fluid under my car thinking clutch slave but upon inspection my inner brake fluid bottle is nearly empty. It looks as though the fluid is dripping from the vacuum tank. Has the fluid syphoned into it? If so what is the cause? I’ve checked the hoses are on the ch...

Re: EZ STEERING GTJOEY ITS A NEW WORLD!

Life with my current E-Type, 14 years ago, started with 6 1/2” centre-laced wires shod with Michelin XWX 205 70’s - same as Gtjoey’s set up. I liked the stance but it always felt heavy, not only at parking speed but also roundabouts, twisty mountains etc. I changed to 5” wheels with XVS 185’s 7 year...

Re: Valve train noise??

Thanks for the advice Steve. Yes I’m aware of the long skirt tappets after discussions on the forum previously. Any manufacturers better than others or do all the usuals supply the same product as is often the case? Rob Beere perhaps?

Re: Valve train noise??

Also, any recommendations for suppliers of good quality tappet buckets and should I be buying the long skirt items?

Re: Valve train noise??

Do you think it’s feasible to replace just the tappet buckets without machining the tappet guides Christopher? I had considered doing this before pulling the head off but was advised by a few that machining the tappet guides and fitting oversized buckets was good practice. My view was to take a punt...

Re: Valve train noise??

No, still tapping! I also had lower timing chain noise which was caused by the chain tensioner being jammed. That is now resolved but after re-checking the tappet clearances, I’m convinced my noisy tappet is due to it being worn and rocking in the guide. At some point the head will have to come off ...

Re: Diff ratio

Thanks again for more useful information gents. I would like to get my speedo as accurate as I can get it. Bill, could you PM me with contact details of your chap in Clunes please? I did contact an instrument repairer in Heidelberg. They quoted $330 for recalibration, a service and new ratchet mecha...

Re: Diff ratio

Thanks for replies gents. Some checks to carry out.
Interestingly the rev counter has the Jaguar cats head in place of the Smiths name also. Something I’ve never noticed after 14 years of ownership!
I wonder how that came about.

Diff ratio

Hi, My Speedo (SN 6322/00), which I believe is for a 3:31 diff ratio, is reading fast. I suspect my diff ratio has been changed at some time before my ownership. How best do I determine my diff ratio (no tag fitted) so I can have my speedo recalibrated. Incidentally I’m running correct size Michelin...

Re: Wheel size

Hey Andrew, Nice to hear from you mate. Yes same. I had 6” CWW with 205’s on my red S1 2+2 (too much bling) and on my current 3.8 FHC when I bought both of them. On my 3.8, I swapped them for 6 1/2” curly hub, centre laced with the 205’s (which really filled the arches) as the 6” wheels the 3.8 came...

Wheel size

Hi gents, Just spent a rainy afternoon watching the 2016 Kinrara Trophy. Fantastic! I was fortunate to have been there for it. I note most of the E-Types racing appear to be running competition wires both up front and on the rear. Would these most likely be 6” all round? They look very “fat” but thi...

Re: Covered headlamps - water tightness

Using a torch in my dark garage I shone the light, under the bonnet, at the back of both the headlamps. Looking from the front I could see the light shining through at the top. Clearly this is where I’m getting dirty water in from the front wheels slinging it up whilst driving on a wet road, resulti...
