Tell us more about your car, is this a new problem whilst driving regularly, or after having work done on the car? I second Steve‘s assessment and would first check clutch hydraulics and setting of the slave cylinder.

Thank you for the replies. The crater does look more like corrosion. I‘ll have alignment checked and order new bearings. Also check oil feed lines. I‘ve taken out the inlet camshaft, no funny marks on that side. Once the bottom is open the main bearings will have to checked as well.

There exists a note of how far up from the air intake the plate should sit. You might want to check for that measurement before fixing it in place. I couldn‘t pull it up just now. If I find it I‘ll post it.
