Re: S3 Fuel Expansion Tank

Hi all, I hope it is okay to jump on this old thread. A while ago we were getting excessive fuel fumes in our S3 2+2 and on investigation it appeared the expansion/vent tank was porous. The test was compressed air in to the removed main fuel tank which was all okay followed by the same method with t...

Re: 2 speed wiper control

Thanks for all the input its all great info, I have just returned from Holland today having done around 750 miles over a long weekend in the "E". Before I went I fitted the new tubular manifolds, new water pipes, engine belts vacuum pipes and fuel pipes in the engine bay. Retuned the carbs and gener...

Re: 2 speed wiper control

Thanks for the info, so does the motor have the speed resistor in it and the switch selects resisted non resisted or is that all built into the switch?
I did end up helicoiling the stud hole, I had wondered about a repair type stud and even considered having a go at making one.

2 speed wiper control

Hi, I am just doing a few extra jobs on my car and thought while I am at the point of fitting new coolant, vac and fuel hoses I would fix my wipers. They work most of the time but when they do only on one speed. How is the two speed controlled, is it a resistor like the heater fan or is it within th...

Re: front ball joint gaiters/prop shaft UJ

Well that's all ordered from S and G as could not get on with JLR site. Maybe I am out of touch but a bit over £60 with p n p for four gaiters and associated clips and retainers seems a bit steep but I hopefully wont have to see to it again for a while. Will attend to the rest at the 100k refurb if ...

Hi Steve, thanks for clearing that up I think I will call JLR classic parts to make sure I get everything I need to do all four.
Cheers

Re: front ball joint gaiters/prop shaft UJ

Oh well looks like IRS out then! It is not too bad yet and grease may nurse it till it gets to 100K miles in around 3.5K I am looking to tidy up the bodywork then so will sort the prop then, unless I win big in which case it will go to a specialist  I was thinking the clear gaiters this time fo...

front ball joint gaiters/prop shaft UJ

I rebuilt my IRS about 3 years ago and renewed the props shaft UJ's at the same time taking car to get genuine ones or so I thought.. The rear UJ now has a small amount of play and I am thinking of removing the prop shaft and replacing the UJ's or Prop shaft and wondered if anyone has done this with...

Re: Rebuilding lsd.

I take it you've checked and or changed the oil?
My previous 3.07 was starting to make a slight noise before I went to 2.88. It was low on oil so I gave it a fresh change and all was good from then on, no noises etc right up till I swapped it out a few years later. Just a thought. Good luck

Re: Webers or Fuel Injection

Hello Colin, "I find your comments very enlightening as I was also considering injection, however straight pipes to the airbox and possibly SU's or a setup on a rolling road for the Strombergs looks like a better option all being considered." If you mount two pipes with a bigger diamter to the airf...

Re: Alternator Light again

I have a couple of Butecs and control boxes in the loft. Other than that, I generally don't stock anything like that as any decent old time alternator shop can repair these easily. Postage is going to be expensive. Because your symptoms follow alternator speed, I think that is where your problem is...

Re: Alternator Light again

I've had exactly the same flickering for 5 years now. Battery charges fine so I ignore it, rightly or wrongly! That is what I have been doing but have decided it can not be right so feel I should try to sort it out at long last, we will see where it leads. Maybe I can find a shop to go through the ...

Re: Alternator Light again

Think about this:- the control box works as it is switching the field voltage either full on or off and is regulating the voltage. Since the flickering is related to alternator speed, I'd either look at how a diode connection can leak to earth or, as you have new brushes, at how they misconduct on ...

Alternator Light again

Hi all, I have the old charging light flicker on my series 3 2+2 it is almost unperceivable in daylight but very noticeable in the dark. I have very healthy battery voltage when running at around 14v and to be honest it has been this way for quite some time but I feel I should really attend to it no...

Re: Webers or Fuel Injection

I have mounted the Getrag 265 with 5 gears. The fifth is 1: 0,81, therefore an "overdrive". Regrds Wolfgang Gatza That is overdrive in my book too! I fitted a 2.88 and am pleased with the difference in revs on my four speed box but I am considering a five speed box too. I find your comments very en...

Wow £700 I was thinking I would be doing well for £3-400 so that is a real bonus if he is prepared to pay anywhere near that figure. I guess it could have been swapped in theory and we will possibly never know, the car has never been restored and I do have a history, everything looked like it had no...

3.07 series 3 Diff

Hi Can anyone help me out please, I have a series 3 3.07 diff as I swapped mine to a 2.9 during an axle rebuild. I have been asked will it fit a series 1 car and about the condition and a price. Can anyone tell me what it is worth? It has done around 80k and I was happy with it for the 20k I drove i...

Re: Running Temperature etc

When you say "bypass valve", are you referring to the bypass valves on the carbs Hi Phillip, Yes the Carburettor bypass I tried to attach an image but the phone file was too large. Hi Mark, Well that is where the distributor vacuum is connected and I was surprised too, I will have to check if they ...

Re: Vacuum Pipes on series 3

I am about to fit a vacuum advance unit to my car (couple of weeks time) and note that currently the vacuum pipes for the distributor split into two then go to each side where they again split into two they, are then individually connected to the bypass valves on the carburettor sides. Is this givin...

Re: Running Temperature etc

I have been checking things in advance and removed the vacuum unit pipes and blocked them off. I noted they fit to the bypass valve so I am not sure if this is manifold or likely to be similar to ported vacuum. I also noted two blanked of pipes 1 at the front right manifold and one at the left rear ...
