Re: S3 V12 Stromberg/Dizzy vacuum pipes

There is a lot of information about Octane numbers here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Octane_rating#Difference_between_RON,_MON,_and_AKI From the table it looks as though your 92 (AKI) Octane fuel would behave like 97 (RON) fuel in the UK so the 12 deg timing setting might be OK and the 8 deg setti...

Re: Brake Vapour Lock

Thanks for the responses guys.
Rear brake air scoops are fitted and in pretty good shape. New brake fluid was flushed through the whole system just before my trip.

Brake Vapour Lock

On a recent run up from Cadiz through Spain & Portugal in my S3 OTS I experienced repeated episodes of vapour lock in the brakes. Car was fully loaded with luggage, tools and spares and ambient temperatures were 30 deg plus. The route included several significant climbs and descent; time controls on...

Re: What problems with Crankcase Breather fitted this way?

Hi Sandy, By connecting the breather that way it is upstream of the throttle butterflies and so will not be seeing the manifold vacuum. It certainly will not work as intended and might make the engine more prone to leak oil from e.g. the crankshaft seal. If the engine is in poor shape oil mist may a...

Re: Sovy Failure

Hi Julian, Thanks for the quick, thorough and positive response to us all. Quite different to the terse response from the vendor of my failed unit a while ago. I think the recent forum visit demonstrated very well the challenges SNGB face as manufacturer and vendor of so many different parts to a ma...

Re: V12 Hot coil problem & leaky carburettor

The misfire sounds like the original OPUS unit is failing which is very common. A replacement system such as the one from SNGB may well cure it.
The O ring replacement procedure is probably in the Stromberg rebuild info in the Knowledge base.

Re: Air in the brakes ?? Series 3 E-type

Hi Bob, In my experience the brakes on these cars can be difficult. I experienced exactly what you describe on my FHC and no matter what I tried I (including a full brake rebuild by a "well respected specialist") I could not improve the situation so learned to live with it for several years. The car...

Re: Sovy Failure

Yes, I had the same thing happen to me last year. Returned the bottle to MC&W who said they had not come across this before. The paint on the bulkhead was badly marked so the fix involved a lot more work that just changing the bottle. Simon's modification seems like an excellent idea but I suspect t...

Hi George,
The front lifting eyes are secured to the engine via the two thermostat housing bolts.

Various options here:

I'm sure there will be other suppliers as well, its a fairly standard product.

Hi Damian,
For a specialist try Clayton Classics. Vehicle heating and air con is their main business and Geoff, the owner, knows all there is to know on the subject.

Re: Silencers

Hi Bernie,
I have an old system in my shed that I believe to be as per original.
The OD of the pipe before the silencer is 2 inches and the OD of the pipe after the silencer is 1 3/4 inches. These are the exhaust pipe outside diameters, not the silencer spigots.

For anyone wanting an easy way to fit a later V12 to their S3 there is a kit available that would allow the original engine to be retained complete.

Re: Petrol tank sump removal

Hi Adrian, From the photo its hard to be sure but it looks as though there may be some damage to the tank already. The sump should be vertical rather than at an angle. Perhaps jacking damage sometime in the past? When I removed mine I found it took a surprising amount of force on a breaker bar to ge...

Re: Emission control - removal

When I put the vacuum advance module on my FHC I did not notice any reduction in the crackle on the over run. The OPUS units seem to fail with age as much as mileage. Failure can be partial such as a miss at higher rpm almost like fuel starvation, misfire when hot when hot that recovers when cool or...

Re: Emission control - removal

FWIW this is what I have experienced. MY FHC is a 1972 UK car so never had air injection or gulp valve but was converted by a PO to SU carbs. That conversion included disconnection of most of the vacuum driven equipment. More recently I fitted a vacuum advance unit from British Vacuum and connected ...
