I think you have? A filler cap that vents to atmosphere and an expansion tank that vents to atmosphere?
Correct on both accounts. Should I block the vent in the cap perhaps?

Re: S3 Fuel Expansion Tank

Are you following the "A" and "B" nomenclature from the S3 schematic in post #23? Yep. If so then it looks as if your "C" and the "A/B with a horizontal arrow" are the wrong way round and the expansion tank won't drain back to the main tank. It doesn't matter which of the the two outboard connectio...

Re: S3 Fuel Expansion Tank

I went and had another good look and I found all 4 of them breather pipes. Just extremely hard to see. I applied compressed air (at about 0.2 bar) to the vent pipe and could hear air being blown into the tank (which is near empty) and out of the small hole in the fuel cap. The two pipes are labelled...

Re: S3 Fuel Expansion Tank

Thank you Bob! It WOULD make sense for '71 S3s (mine is Oct 71) to have a rather similar setup as for S2. Its MUCH harder to see what is going on ito breather pipes on the Oct 71 FHC than what it is on the Dec 73 OTS. I'm going to have another look.... It seems the physical locations of the breather...

Re: S3 Fuel Expansion Tank

So unless the filler cap has been replaced by the vented type, whenever the main tank level is above a certain level (vent/return C being the lowest of the 3 standard vents) either by fill level, parking nose down or braking there is no venting of the main tank. The cap is a vented one. Has a small...

Re: S3 Fuel Expansion Tank

So, I brought my '71 FHC home in the hope of finding an expansion tank related pipe being the cause of the petrol fumes in the car. Surprise!!! The '71 FHC fuel tank has one got the "expansion tank drain pipe" labelled "C" in Bob's drawings. No A and dB barbs. The expansion tank also has only two pi...

Or are non emission fuel tanks sealed, i.e. remove the filler cap on a hot day, is there a purge of pressurised air?
I've never had this but now I understand why. There can not be pressure in the tank with this breather.

Re: S3 Fuel Expansion Tank

I plan to get rid of the expansion tank and just have one small breather coming out of the top of the fuel filler tube and then down through the rear floor at the same point as the water drain from the boot/trunk lip. P Don't. If you fill the tank and then park the car leaning downhill to the left,...

Re: S3 Fuel Expansion Tank

Surely this would make the car incredibly smelly? Phil, is this correct, your tank is openly ventilated by this hose? The pipe comes from the expansion tank, goes through the body to the IRS cave and terminates there with an open pipe. But this open pipe may not be how it came from factory - this c...

If anyone can help, I would still like to bottom out the issue of where the expansion tank vent pipe on a non USA/Canada car exits the bodywork.
This is on my S3 RHD OTS:

A close examination of the case/end cap will reveal a small line mark made by Lucas. That line is for correct orientation of the body/cap relationship.
Spot on Dick!!! Aligning the two marks result in the fan turning the correct.

Re: S3 Fuel Expansion Tank

Fantastic pics, thanks Bob! Now comes the big question: Which connections on the tank goes to which connections on the expansion tank? I am aware of three connections on the tank but I see 4 connections on the expansion tank. I presume one of them would go to the carbon cannister or otherwise atmosp...

Re: Fan temperature sensor

I'm going to try another angle to get my thoughts across: Let's pretend we have a magic radiator to somehow keep THE SAME VOLUME of coolant that would be in the radiator at a constant 3degC. This device has some magic way of "instantly" cooling coolant coming from the engine down to 3degC. Right, no...

Re: Fan temperature sensor

running a fan (pre-emptively or not) just does the cooling quicker, At 73'c, it makes no difference - the radiator isn't receiving any water flow. At 74'c, each radiator starts to receive flow. I would rather phrase it as follows: "running a fan (pre-emptively or not) just starts the cooling earlie...

Re: Fan temperature sensor

Philip, you may be slightly overthinking this. If the temperature is or may become too high, why do you want to half run the fans? I don't think so Marek. And to the second question, no. The principle of fitting a fan switch with low temp ratings is to get the fans to activate sooner, creating cool...

Re: Fan temperature sensor

I have 74ºC thermostats in my car with an ECHLIN FS155 68-72ºC fan switch. What I would like to do with your "intelligent fan controller" is replace the otter switch (fan switch) in the bottom hose with a temperature sensor and then program the controller to start the fans at say 68ºC (at a lowish s...
