Re: Speedo not working
There’s a very good maxim which works time and time again - if you’re struggling with something, leave it, have a brew and then start again. After being mystified with the hardura, I had a cuppa, then went back and realised I had them the wrong way round (trying to fit the one to the left of the ste...

Re: Speedo not working
Hi all - problem solved! The cable was not sitting flush at the speedo end - I suspect that the knurled nut was slightly cross threaded so did not seal properly hence the other end was short. I undid it and played around again with the drive end, pulled the inner cable through and connected it to th...

Re: Speedo not working
Thanks everyone for the advice - as usual all knowledge is within the Forum! I’ll disconnect the cable at the speedo end and make sure that is is sitting properly and see if I can get any more inner cable at the drive end and then refit it and test again with the drive. If I still can’t get a longer...

Re: Speedo not working
Hi Christopher and Richard - thanks for your notes. The two pictures are both of the gearbox end. As far as I can see from various pictures of the cable I’ve looked at on suppliers’ websites, one end has a knurled nut and the other a square one. The knurled one presumably attaches to the speedo (I c...

Re: Speedo not working
Hi Christopher (and possibly others...). Well I had a look at the inner cable and there is about a half inch protrusion at the speedo drive end. It would therefore appear, as I had assumed, that the inner cable is simply not connecting inside the drive, presumably because it is too short. Is it poss...

Re: Speedo not working
Thanks Christopher - I obviously can’t see the speedo end but on the basis that the drive end does not have a plastic distance piece on it, I assume that it must be attached at the speedo end. However the inner cable at the drive end only protrudes about half an inch which might be the problem, whic...

Speedo not working
Following the rebuild of my car, the speedo didn’t work. It was always wobbly so I fitted a new speedo cable during the rebuild (the longer one for a 2+2). However it doesn’t even wobble now! So I disconnected the cable from the speedo drive and attached a drill to the inner cable and ran it (anti-c...

Re: Sun visor photo
Thanks for that - I don’t remember the captured nuts as the PO had secured them with all sorts of different screws. Have ordered some ‘proper’ ones. Got a bit of time now to actually finish the car off!

Re: 5-Speed Boxes
Steve - yes, just suddenly realised that it only fits the 2+2 but if you’ve got one, its a great mod!

Re: 5-Speed Boxes
Why don’t you look at finding a Jaguar Type A overdrive ‘box from the ‘60s? I found one on from a 1968 420 on eBay five years ago and had it checked/rebuilt, total cost under £1,000. Similar ‘boxes are from the ‘S’ and the XJ6 of similar age. Cost to put it in with new clutch etc around £1,500 to £2...

Sun visor photo
Hi - is it possible for someone with a Series 1 to post a picture of their sun visor bracket, where it is affixed to the cant rail? I assume all models have similar brackets. I recently retrimmed the interior and am trying to work out which way up the bracket goes as the original holes are now cover...

Re: Revised data plate and gearbox change
Hi Steve - thanks for that. The change was manual to manual with o/d. It is an original UK RHD car. The data plate was more for ‘correctness’ really so that the numbers on the plate match the numbers on the car (not that anyone can see the gearbox number). Good point re he insurers - had forgotten t...

Revised data plate and gearbox change
I have recently installed an overdrive gearbox from a 1968 Jaguar 420. I have however, retained the old gearbox. Should I amend the data plate so that the details show the new gearbox number, and if so, how do I go about it? In addition I assume I should tell the DVLA so that their records are updat...

Re: SU carb blockage?
Problem solved although I’m not really sure why! I took the carbs to bits but apart from the pistons being a bit dirty, all seemed good. I put new HT leads and plugs in and it started. The HT lead to the coil was loose so that probably didn’t help but I drove it without problem about 30 miles to a s...

Re: New battery recommendation
Steve - sorry about the pic, but at least you could see it. Good point re the orientation! I hadn’t thought of that although I think I’ll stick to the terminals on the outside, for ease of installation and attaching a conditioner if nothing else (and less risk of shorting).. I’ve found a black Exide...

Re: New battery recommendation
Hi Steve - this is a picture of mine. As the positive lead is short, I was going to keep it that way round.

Re: New battery recommendation
Alas, an internet search shows that the majority of 069 batteries are too large for my space (my support bracket measures 250x175mm) or the terminals are the wrong way round. I shall start looking at the sizes and terminals first, and then try and fine one that delivers a CCA of at least 550 and AH ...

Hi Steve - thanks for that although what is an ‘069’? Is that a Halford’s battery?

Re: New battery recommendation
Just picked up this post as I am looking for a new battery. Loads of advice I see! I am not worried about period look, just want a battery that is black so I can put a Lucas sticker on it! A number of suggestions have been made from Yuasa YBX3214 (which seems to have the terminals the wrong way roun...

Re: SU carb blockage?
Thanks everyone for your advice. I am away now for a week (Iceland! My partner said she wanted some winter sun - I’m not sure Iceland is what she meant...) so won’t be able to try it all out until my return but I shall let you know the outcome.
