Re: Bonnet opening at speed

Had one open on me many years ago at 70mph. Remembered not to brake and instantly fitted the missing safety catch! Only damage was to the over riders.

Re: London Auction

Its a sad time indeed and nobody wins. I think some people are too quick to forget the good that JD have done for the industry and when I see the gloating going on on other forums, it saddens me. 60 good guys are worried about their futures (one has 4 years left to go for retirement) and it will be ...

Re: Getting "overexposed" on Bleaklow

One of the saddest photos I saw was of 'Johnny Be Good' - an american bomber that went down in the desert. Apparently due to an inexperienced ATC who gave them a route that took them away from the airfield. They landed with no fuel and I think the crew all died of exposure.

Re: Donald Campbell E-Type

Agree with that Steve. I can’t imagine much was usable from the original tbh. Aluminium is difficult to rework and I don’t think the engine is original? Still great to see ‘it’ back though!

Re: Donald Campbell E-Type

I think its a shame that it was restored. I would have preferred for the team to have built a complete replica - what we have now is a boat that is made up of a huge number of new panels and parts. But, if that is what the Campbell family wanted to do then so be it.

Re: Wheel: what Tightening torque

Really interesting. All I will say is that if spinners have been left on a car for a few thousand miles, they can be really difficult to shift. I always loosen and refit mine after long journeys.

I'm not saying they self tighten just that they seem harder to remove.....

Because it was a water thrower and not the crankshaft oil thrower.

Re: Dyno Testing

Think I should join in here. No 6 partially seized and whether it was due to being too tight in the bore or insufficient cooling I don’t know. As I needed the caR for a long trip on the continent the following week, I honed the bore and changed the piston in situ. That was when I found it was a std ...

Could also be the water thrower on the outer part of the aluminium hub.

That's the one Rory! I was never comfortable whacking the dished ones in - much prefer the 4.2 type.

Re: Core plug removal method

Rory, there is an alternative to this type of plug. You can buy one with a thread and strap that tightens down by doing up the nut. This way, if you do get a leak, you can (in theory) simply tighten it. I have never used them but I am sure I have seen them on the XKE Lovers forums.

Re: Rear screen chromes that fit?

Good luck with that one Jeremy. We only plate them if they are really bad. You could use, as a temporary measure the plasti chrome filler strip used on minis while you try and source a pair that fit. Looks a lot better than the black filler with no chrome.
