Sealing the 4 chain case studs
Has anybody devised a successful method of sealing the four 5/16" downward studs that are at the front corners of the head and bolt it to the front of the block? I've tried sealant on both sides of the head gasket, wrapping the stud with gasket maker, copper and aluminum washers, and BSPP washers wi...

Re: Ride Height
Rear spring part numbers from Jaguar for the Ser 1 4.2l DHC and FHC are identical, so CMC's advise doesn't make sense. Your spring extenders will work to lower your car, I used them on a car that I used to autocross. Yours look quite long. If they interfere with the central tube on the lower control...

Chis it was not sufficiently tightened on assembly. It's a new motor and it's leaking unfortunately.

Rear oil galley bolt size
On the right rear vertical face of the 4.2l block Jaguar used a bolt called a "Headed Bolt" part C2157 to seal off the oil galley. Can anybody advise what wrench size fits that bolt. I need to tighten it, and would like to try to do that without pulling the engine etc.

Re: Wire Wheels Interchange
Me too! I ran Dayton 15 X 7" wires with tubeless tires (Hoosier) on my vintage race car for years. Many off track excursions over curbs, through gravel, often at very high speeds. Never bent a wheel or a rim, never a tire problem, or flat. Now run 16 X 7" steel and 17 X 7" alum Dayton's with tubeles...

Re: Gearbox input shaft grease?
Brian Get a couple of 3/8 NF bolts about 3 - 4 inches long, and cut the heads off. You can round the shank off if you want. Place into the top two holes in the block and use as guides to mount the transmission. Makes the job much easier - well it would have anyway.

Re: SU minutiae
Bernoulli's principle dictates that an increase in airspeed (a fluid) through a fixed, or in the SU a slowly expanding venturi results in an increase in the depression in the venturi. It's the principle that all carburetors operate on. I think that the less than "snappy" response is probably in comp...

Re: SU minutiae
Thank you gentlemen. Chris. I agree with the old saying - it has certainly been my experience. I have an EDIS system in the car so I can make those changes simply - just need to borrow an old lap top to do it. The Mega Jolt is very old technology. Peter. I think that the piston locking theory is a g...

Re: SU minutiae
Perhaps I should add more to my question. All carburetors need some method of increasing fuel flow when there is a demand for acceleration. That is the function of the damper in a constant depression carburetor. By slowing the rise of the piston in the face of a opening throttle, and thereby tempora...

Thanks Peter, but my question is why the free play - why is is designed to have 1/8 to 3/32 of upward movement free of dampening.

Re: SU minutiae
Thanks Peter. I've owned this car since 1972. For most of the time it's run with the stock engine. It has always had this problem. I've also owned another 4 E Types, driven many more, non of which had this issue. I'm not convinced that the state of tune of the engine has anything to do with this. It...

SU minutiae
When I give my engine a bit of quick throttle at low rpm there is an immediate but short flat spot, which can become quite irritating when driving at slow city speeds. It typically happens when you back off the throttle to zero, then try to accelerate back to the speed you were going. Typical close ...

Re: Dunlop Racing tyre.
Why are they cross ply? Well I suspect it's because they want to maintain a vintage look to the racing. Watching those great lurid over steering power slides around corners at Goodwood is very entertaining. You can't do that on radials. First they loose grip without much warning and quite suddenly w...

Re: 4.5 Litre rebuild
4.7 l follows from increasing stoke 1/2 an inch (1/4" up and 1/4 down). The crank and rods fit nicely into the block, and there is plenty of bore depth at the bottom to accommodate the extra movement. You have to move the pin up in the piston 1/4 of an inch to accommodate the extra stroke and there ...

Re: Bump steering cure?
Bump steer or not is caused by the relationship of the suspension arms to the steering arms and tie rods. All rotate on different circumferences so there is pushing and pulling of the things they are attached to - the upper and lower ball joints and the steering arm respectively. When you hit a spee...

MOT doesn't exist in N.A. with no particular carnage. I'd be way more worried about some idiot on their cell phone and "driving". Problem has become greater here than impaired driving.

J The intake cam on the big valve head (BVH) can be used to drive the tach - it needs to be threaded to fit the screw on drive. However ......most BVH won't accept a generator because at some stage Jaguar changed the basic layout of the rear intake side cam bearing cap and it is not compatible. The ...

Re: Rear hub carrier damaged
I've wrecked a few older sedans XJ6, 12's, and S Types and IMO the aluminum hub carriers are interchangeable among the cars that used this suspension, although they may have a slightly different appearance from model to model that centers around the shape of the bell end - that is the inner top end ...
