Re: Gearbox Oil Change
My garage is a very tight fit for an E-Type, I can only open the bonnet about 18". I jacked the front up pretty high using a 3 tonne trolley jack under the picture frame and some HD axle stands and drained the gearbox. I have a strip of oak cable tied under the picture frame permanently to protect i...

Re: Gearbox Oil Change
“gearboxes are usually lubricated for life - aren't they? ” No no no no no...... Only do this if you want that gearbox to have a short life. There is a service interval for E-Type gearboxes and axles, it is 12,000 miles. And don’t forget that the oil change interval for the XK engine is 3,000 miles...

Re: Gearbox Oil Change
Both on the LHS side for me. Sorry guys, I honestly did give it a reasonably good shot without bothering the group. I just looked at gearbox, lubrication, oil etc in the Haynes index, nothing. And 'gearbox oil change' in the group didn't get what I wanted. I didn't think of it as a 'routine' item - ...

I have done a fair amount of research, but details on removing the internal trim is hard to find. Some say it is impossible, which saves looking!

Brilliant
I have heard of them, but they just went straight to the top of my list for Santa.
I know everything about refilling the gearbox except getting at it from inside the car.
Thanks

Gearbox Oil Change
A dumb newbie question, but how do you get at the gearbox filler? Haynes says nothing about changing or topping up the gearbox. In the Supplement about removing the engine, it tells you how to get the cover off - start with removing the radio console. Then pull up the handbrake and "Lift up the cove...

Re: Stripped sump plug thread
I inherited a sump plug hole which had been stripped, upsized to 18mm and then stripped again. I really didn't want to take the sump off (impossible inside my garage, and a tow truck to get it anywhere else) so I got a reduced shank 18.5mm drill bit and bored the opening out in situ with a right-ang...
Re: Sump Plug
UNC looks like a better choice. But it's not only Jaguar who are so fond of fine threads. 1.5mm pitch looks pretty standard for 13mm, 15mm 17mm and 20mm plugs.
I just bought a 20mm magnetic one intended for a Porsche for my 'E'.

Re: Sump Plug
Thanks guys I thought the main oil pickup was from the inclined tube which goes through the P clip. The careful previous owner put the P clip upside down so that the pickup was too steep, then bolted the sump up, which fractured the oil pump body. Then they seized the engine big time. Unanswerable q...
Sump Plug
Looks like I need to tap out my sump drain plug to 20mm. Previous careful owners have taken it out to 18mm and then managed to strip the thread again! I have drained the oil. I would like to do it in situ, then run the old old through the engine to flush out (nearly) all of the swarf. Does the oil p...

Re: Stripped sump plug thread
I just bought the oversized one from Coolcats. It is 18TPI but 1/16th inch larger than standard (so 11/16ths) with a taper and slots to allow it to self tap the existing thread more deeply. About £10 + £10 postage. I am not sure about the state of my existing thread, it just didn't feel right when I...

There have been two S2 columns on eBay this week. First time I ever saw even one.
Why commission a unique taper roller bearing for a non-demanding application on a low volume car? Only Jaguar engineers would have known.

Hi
I would be happy to sell you my unused solid bearings from SNGB at 2/3rds new cost!
Nothing really wrong with having a well greased solid bush replacement, just not quite pukka.

Re: distributor
I had endless problems with my distributor which was rebuilt by Distributor Doctor. Nothing wrong with their work, just iffy rotor arms, distributor caps and capacitors. One capacitor lasted only 1 mile. I gave up on the originality and had a 123 fitted. Brilliant! I never had issues with distributo...

Re: Upper Steering Column Bearings
I bought SNG Barratt replacements but they turned out to be solid types. My lower plastic cage taper needle roller item had a weird effect where it was bearing on plastic instead of the needles, because some of the cage had become swollen as if by fire or chemical attack. Definitely no fire ever in ...

Re: Adjusting bonnet / urgent
I have the my original bonnet, shell and frames, and none of them have been seriously dinged (shell has been dipped and stripped, so I know). My bonnet is still a few mm skewed. The shims give up and down and fore and aft movement. Is there any lateral side-to-side movement on the front mountings wh...

Re: Broken clock from a 1969 series 2 E-type
Can you rig up a caravan style solar battery trickle-charger to solve both problems?
The clock power drain will be absolutely miniscule, the internal drain in the battery probably dominates.
