Strange but probably true.
My car has spent its life since 1969 in Spain and unfortunately I know little of its history since then. I've owned it for just over a year. Chris

Probably a series 2 seats, they only fold forward, Chris.

Completing the story of the headrest sponge which has completely turned to powder, I finally took the bull by the horn, removed the seats, opened up about 10 staples at the base, slid up the inside a lenght of 2x1 inch wood until it connected with the base of the metal shaft of the headrest then wit...

Having just fitted a new 11AC alternator without the built in voltage regulator I'm reticent to change it yet, I understand that there are available new alternators that look like the your old Dynamo, probably a bit pricey but maybe a way of reducing your little black box troubles. I try and avoid o...

Yes I guess this is a later addition, there are 5 connectors one doubled, also some wires from the 4TR are routed to this erroneous black box, I'm wondering if this 16RA is doing the job of the 3AW as I cannot see the 3AW anywhere which apparently was fitted on later cars anyway. The small ign. red ...

Thanks, certainly I need to check this out.
The 4TR is still fitted and working in conjunction with the 11AC alternator, the 16RA is located just above the 4TR.

I have a photo which one day I need lessons how to include here.
Its definitely a Black plastic Lucas England 16RA box
SNG don't know what it does, unless it's the predecessor to the 3AW relay that controls the ignition warning light.

Thank you, I don't know why the new 4TRs are so
unreliable, maybe it was a bad batch.
I'll certainly check out a proper electric auto/ marine repair shop, assuming any replacement will operate on the same principle as the 4TR, or is there an electronic external option. I'll check. Chris.

You are probably right, going the modern way of a modern Alternator is going to win in the end, however my 11AC is nearly new, maybe I'll try one more 4TR which I just had returned under warranty from SNG.
Thanks for your help

4TR

Once again this regulator has reared its ugly head, it think this is the third one I've fitted. I am sure the annoying flickering of the lights, head, side and even reversing lights plus the Ammeter jerking about are down to this 4TR not working as it should. I know if can go down the route of fitti...

Thanks Geoff, yes you are correct, there seems to be a spring steel part inside that is causing friction. The sponge inside the headrest has turn to powder hence the need to remove it.

Head rest

Has anyone tried to remove the headrest on a 65 4.2. ?

I suspect the only way is to remove the seat back and open it up from the bottom.

Thanks. Chris.

Thanks for that, I don't feel like getting aggressive with a head restraint so I may have to live with it, the seats are in good condition and I'd rather leave them in peace for the moment. Chris.

Hi, the alternator is an evening problem, my brain doesn't work in the mornings.
On another easy topic, I can't remove the headrests, they have a single pillar into the seat and seem impossible to pull out. The inside of the headrest has turned from sponge to mushy powder. Any ideas? Chris

Phil, I had a look at the various wiring diagrams suggested by Steve, and couldn't see a solution. It's possible that my car when it was converted to LHD in 1969 had this extra ignition light installed then as per later 4.2 cars and the 3AW installed too? I'll go and explore and see if the 3AW is th...

Phil That's most helpful, and makes a lot of sence. It's possibly my confusion is that I have a larger brighter ignition warning red light which is independent of the ignition (oil pressure) light within the speedo, this light which may not be standard is the same size as the green choke light, I'm ...

Angus,
On the bottom of the Speedometer there are three warning lights
Ignition. Fuel. and Headlamps.
Are we agreed that the red Ignition lamp is in fact an oil pressure warning light? Thanks.

Thanks, I'm still at a loss as to how an oil pressure switch has any corralation to the alternator no charge warning light. Chris
