Re: The William Lyons history

Matthew Davis, the MD of the Jaguar Heritage Trust at Gaydon, gave his email address at the end of the article in the JEC magazine. "Have a look at what we've built & if you enjoy it, please email me." I was going to ask him whether I wasn't supposed to be able to read any of the words on the ' Dewi...

Re: Building an E type from scratch

Not many 1965 restorations seem to feature on the forum. It would be great to see a few photos.
Is it a UK car?

Gearbox access grommet

Can anyone recommend a replacement grommet BD10821 that is similar to the original ? This replacement (on the left) is too small on the O.D. and too large on the I.D. & the rubber is too stiff. Most replacements show the centre dished, which doesn't seem to be how my old one is, but maybe the dishin...

Re: E type full build S1 4.2 Coupe

Hi Bryan, If you confirm that you have a 3.8 bodyshell you may find you have some extra work to do to adapt it to the later 4.2 fittings. I see from your photos that your shell has the access holes for the rear inboard brakes. These holes aren't on my March 1956 car, but if anything it's an advantag...

I don't think I've seen a car with a single nudge-bar rod connecting the front over-riders. There are usually 2 on the US ones. Top one missing perhaps.

Re: Top seat belt fixings FHC

Hi Paul, Yes, it does seem strange that the escutcheon is counterbored and that the spacers are too large to fit into the c’bore. My spacer diameter is 19.2mm and the c’bore is 16.6mm. The depth to the head of the mounting boss is also similar to yours. But what the boss will tighten Up against is t...

Re: Series 1 Vented discs

Can you put washers/spacers in under the supports, or would that move the shield in the wrong direction? When I fitted larger calipers I increased the size of the cut outs, but that solution doesn't help you. I'm often surprised by the 'leave it off it does nothing' view, and then, sometimes by the ...

Re: Breaking the barrier

Sorry if I came across as a bit glib previously, but the saving from 17mpg to 22mpg is about £100 over 1000 miles. The cost of changing carburettors and or diff would take a while (~10 to 20 years depending on your annual mileage) to recover. Can't deny that the extra distance between fuel stops (75...

Re: Breaking the barrier

Mark, I thought your handle was max-it-out for speed. But perhaps it's for mpg ! My average is 23mpg over 19,000 miles. On 4 occasions I've got 29 and a bit, but I suspect my high mpg's are more likely due to uncertainty in the data. No wing mirrors. Standard engine & carbs. What's the point in tryi...

Re: Design info

Warren, I suspect that Malcolm Sayer joining Jaguar in 1950 provided the key ingredient to the shape of the car. There is a short but useful tribute to him in the front of Philip Porter's 'The Iconic E-Type'. The shape of the Alfa Disco Volante was possibly an influence on Sayer (Porter's 'The Defin...

Re: Owner's manual edition

Paul, If you want a usable version of the handbook to keep in the car, the Brooklands version for the 4.2 is E/131/6 but apart from minor differences (eg this handbook shows a switch and warning light for the heated rear window on the FHC, whereas the switch and light weren't fitted until Feb '66) i...

Re: 4lb radiator cap

Gents, Was this the previous thread? http://forum.etypeuk.com/viewtopic.php?t=11088 I have been trying to solve excessive coolant loss since I lost my previous cap (don't ask) & fitted a replacement. The distance from top seating surface to bottom seating surface is 20mm on my replacement header tan...

Re: 4lb radiator cap

I had to buy a replacement cap from SNG and found that I was loosing more coolant than with the old cap. SNG checked the depth of the cap & said it was correct. I noted that the new cap was also stiffer to turn on the header tank. I eventually sussed that the cap only required one rubber gasket - th...

Re: Lock barrel direction?

My locks are handed. Serrations downwards on the drivers side (RHD) key. When I bought my car it had different key numbers for each door. I eventually changed the lock detents in the odd door lock so that I had just one key. I don't remember it being too difficult to do - once I had worked out which...

Re: Open Day at e-Conic Cars (Moss Jaguar)

Yes, -1 degree to start with tomorrow & snow from the East - is it really April next week ?

Washing the E-Type this morning in preparation for tomorrow I found a slight leak from the brake master cylinder, so I may have to come in alternative transport also.
