Re: Center console, originality

Hi A March 63 car should also have the cross-hatched alloy trim, rather than the earlier polka dot version. Sadly, the cross hatch trim is no longer produced for the E-Type, just the polka dot. There have been posts on here regarding the use of a similar alloy trim that some modern Aston Martin cars...

Re: The big 6-0

Happy Birthday!
My ex, now enjoying a sunnier climate in Greece, turned 60 last November. Even though it’s been with its new owner for almost a year, I still raised a glass to celebrate and remember the fun I had restoring and driving it.

Over the years, I’ve found https://www.hagerty.co.uk/valuation/tool/ to be pretty consistent and they use private/auction/trade sale prices as a guide.

Re: 6 speed classic gearbox

I’ve not heard of them, but if you want something in the UK, The Splined Hub in Oundle are advertising 5 and 6 speed gearbox upgrades. Might be worth speaking to them to see what they can do?

I’ve used the CTek chargers for years, both for modern and classic cars. Do the job with no fuss.

Re: Differential Gear Oil- GL-5 or GL-4 with additive?

Hi When Alan Slawson rebuilt my 1963 powerlok diff, he included the following info re oil: Warning Note – Castrol ‘Axle Z90’ limited slip oil or quality equivalent oil to be used for the LSD unit. Synthetic or semi-synthetic oils do not work in these units and MUST not be used He supplied the Z90 oi...

Re: Independent inspection

Mike, Welcome. It’s definitely a buyers market at the moment and 90k is a huge sum to pay for 2+2. As per above, this is Hegerty’s view: https://i.postimg.cc/B6f1p56w/IMG-1010.png If it’s a S1 2+2 you’ve got your heart set on, then I would definitely get an inspection done. Have you had E-Types befo...

Re: Reversing light wire coming from?

Hi There should be a green/brown wire that runs from one side of the switch (on the gearbox) to the reversing lamp. The other side of the switch should have a green wire that connects to a dual bullet connector as per the diagram and eventually goes to fuse 7. Have you found the green/brown wire at ...

Re: Great service & rubbish products

I went through a few sets of the plastics ones, they either leaked at the spigot and/or from the top as the caps didn’t seat properly (unless you replaced the seals with much thicker items). The final versions I fitted came with the hoses pre-attached, but even those still leaked if the slightest pr...

Did your bottle split where the spigot for the hose is by any chance?

Re: 3.8 S1 seats...

I had the correct ‘bucket’ seats in my 63 fhc and I did not find them uncomfortable at all. I’m a smidge under 6ft and made several journeys of over 300 miles as well as plenty of shorter trips and they were fine. In fact, I found them more comfortable than the seats in my wife’s 2015 Mini Cooper.

Re: Rear Bump Stops - which way round, please ?

Hi
Can you post a pic of what you’ve got, as I don’t remember mine being asymmetrical - but it was along time ago so I may be wrong.
The rubber stops on the SNG site look symmetrical to me but that may just be the angle of the picture.

Re: Preparing for restoration and paint

I used a heat gun and scraper to get down to the original red oxide layer and then went down to the metal using the polycarbide discs. These are less aggressive than grinding discs, but you do go through them at quite a rate! Some companies offer a ‘baking’ process that in theory removes the potenti...

Re: OIL AND DIP STICK

The ‘F’ is more than likely to be an ‘E’ for empty.
The level should be within the cross hatched area, preferably in the upper portion of it. That’s assuming you have the correct dipstick for your car. Plenty of threads on this subject if you search.

I also used Duramat - black checker plate with yellow ramp edging. Had the car up on axel stands, jacks and hydraulic ramps with no issues. Any oil or fluids cleaned up ok with engine degreaser, but were cleaned up immediately so I can’t comment on prolonged exposure. Easy to fit and cut.

Re: Possible bent valve stem causing engine to lock up

The metal you describe as found in the sump, sounds like bearing shell material. Assuming it’s not the thrust washer. If there are still bits of the shell that have come adrift they may be what’s causing the crank to become jammed if they are lodged between bearing and crank?

Re: New Rear lights for DHC

Hi Andrew, I don’t think you can bank on getting a ‘one size fits all’ aftermarket set of lights. I had my originals re-chromed by Castle Chrome as a new set I bought had the same issues as in your pics. Castle did say that the Mazak was difficult to work with and could not guarantee the outcome but...
