Re: Wrong Distributor

Just leave the fuel filler cap off and go for a drive, if it's OK beyond 20 mins then is the time to locate the tank breathers. If it cuts out as before then the tank breathers are not at fault. My guess would be the condenser and/or the coil, best sorted by substitution. cheers John.

Re: Metallic rasp/rattle under acceleration 2500rpm

Hi Mark, the crankcase should have negative pressure in it to help prevent oil leaks, ie. air in and not oil out it is worth checking your system for a blocked filter at the top between the two camshafts and the associated pipe-work though. Could you record the noise so we could all have a listen? I...

Re: Metallic rasp/rattle under acceleration 2500rpm

It might help if you could tell us which part of the car it is coming from. My first thoughts would be loose baffles in the silencers. Drive along with the drivers and passengers side windows open and you may get a better idea of what it could be. I had a similar one a few years ago that turned out ...

Re: bang and black smoke

If the tank was replaced at the beginning of this year the petrol should be OK, but did they drain the old tank and put the old petrol back in. The fact that you were charged for the new petrol does not mean that you received it. Also the old petrol would have still been in the fuel lines, filter an...

Re: bang and black smoke

Hi Den, NO, not without sorting out the mis-fire. You could do a lot of damage to the engine/gearbox and you really don't want to risk that. If it has been stood more than 12 months you need to drain the tank, fuel lines, fuel filter and carbs refreshing with some new petrol. If the engine runs swee...

Re: bang and black smoke

Hi Den, One or more cylinders not firing putting unburnt petrol into the exhaust system, this "bomb" is then ignited by the exhaust from one of the cylinders that is firing. The black smoke is carbon deposited in the exhaust many years ago being liberated. Provided that you have not damaged the exha...

Re: S2 wiring and bulkhead holes

Hi Tony,
could you please take a better photo, perhaps from the other side of the bulkhead, I am having trouble deciding where to look for it on my car, or perhaps use your flash and be a little further away would help, cheers John.

Re: S2 wiring and bulkhead holes

I know I have seen that strange hole and after much thought, I think it may be where the chrome bonnet locking handle fits. The two cut outs are for the "U" clips to sit in that hold than handle on. Does it align with the bonnet lock on the engine side? cheers John.

Re: S2 wiring and bulkhead holes

The rubber lucar bullet connector as shown in your photo comes in 2 types. The first is a common connector that connects all wires inserted into it together. The second types are insulated from each other which means that of the 4 wires two sets of 2 are connected. With this information someone will...

Re: Timing? Carburation?

Old petrol would be my first check. If it has been stood with the tank, pump, lines and filter full for many years the petrol will be useless. Drain and replenish with new.

Re: Hose from inlet manifold to bulkhead

Hi Tim, if you wish you could send me the old insert and let me know how the new part would need to be different, it would save you having to measure the thread and hexagon. Would you want it to be alloy or stainless or perhaps brass? cheers John.

Re: Hose from inlet manifold to bulkhead

If you can supply a drawing of the part required I can make one for you in a week or ten days (delay is due to waiting for a few parts for my lathe being re-conditioned) It will cost you postage for return to you and the raw material about £3.00, cheers John.

Re: revs at 2,000 rpm....HELP. 67 fhc

As a previous reply has said, you are getting too much air into the engine. I would loosen the piston dampers and let them lie on the top of the dash pots as you start the engine and rev. it lightly. They should all rise together and an equal amount, if they don't you know where to look for the air ...

Re: Lower steering column

Hi Tony, if you cannot locate one how about an engineering solution? Extend the one that you have already. If you are not concerned about the safety aspect of the collapsing lower column drill out the plastic plugs, extend the assembly to fit your car and then weld it solid. You will have some compr...

Re: Lower steering column

I've had the tape on the lower column and total length is 34.25 inches or 86.5cm. Mine is a collapsible unit which consists of a tube with an inner rod which is a sliding fit. These two pieces are held together with small nylon or plastic "rivets", which on impact will snap and enable the column to ...

Re: Chassis straightening

Hi Rich, thanks for the photos, it looks worse than it is really, not too much to do. You could buy one of the cheap invertor TIG machines, they are DC only so you cannot weld ali but will be adequate for most of this job. If you are experienced with TIG you are half-way there, plug welds done with ...

Re: Chassis straightening

Hi Richard, the job that you have described used to be my bread and butter for 25 years, I have recently replaced the box section rails on my roadster Series 2 as they were looking a little untidy. For your job I would just drill out the welds and replace the rails with new ones from Robey. I rememb...

Re: Oil drain bolt size

Yes axle stands are not the best for this operation, I have the use of a car inspection pit which is totally safe, probably more so than a 2 post lift and some 4 posters too. You will be amazed how easy this operation is when you make an attempt at it.
