Ive got the horn

Hi all Been out in my car today and the horn has started to work on its own as I was driving back. It seemed worse when I turned so I am presuming that the the steering column shaft is shorting somewhere to cause this. Has anyone else experienced this? If so is there a fix (replacement bush kit) or ...

Re: Brake line terminations.

Mike
Good luck with a cheap brake tool working on kunifer pipe
It is not as easy as working with copper
Automec supply a kit for etypes with all pipes made up for less than the cost of a decent brake flaring tool.
I really don't know why you would bother making your own?

Re: Bonnet Hinge Seized On. Anyone Been here before?

weld an m16 or m20 nut (can't remember which) and screw a length of studding into this with another nut to lock it tight, you might be able to turn it a bit then to free it if not slide on the hammer in my case a bit of 3" bar with a hole with @1-2 mm clearance on the studding the studding was @ 600...

Re: Automatic to manual gearbox conversion

Hi
I have just completed a manual to 5 speed conversion using a getrag 265 from an xj with a conversion spacer ring
If I was to do the same conversion again I would be tempted to fit an e type four speed manual together with a 2.88 diff instead of a 5 speed.
Straight swap and less hassle

Re: Only took me 3 years

Hi Current ratio is 3.31 as I left the original diff in place. I managed to acquire an e type 4 speed box after buying the getrag and also a 2.88 diff but figured that by mating the 5 speed with the 3.31 this would leave the 4 speed and 2.88 for another project. TBH I haven't driven it very hard sin...

Only took me 3 years

Hi All Thought I might share my experience with my series 3 project here in the Series 3 section as opposed to the restoration section...(If Admin want to move it then I won't complain) This is my experience and it was only going to take me 6 months max. 3 years down the line and I am 99% complete. ...

Re: Rebuild update / steering conversion question

don't make the same mistake that I did. I moved the brackets 180 degrees and then the ignition lock hit the mounting bracket so wouldn't fit in the steering column... Stupid mistake I suppose but something to watch out for....apart from that relatively straightforward to convert Measure twice cut on...

Re: s3 steering rack left to right hand drive

Rob I inherited a set of custom pipes when I bought my rhd steering rack and have ended up routing the pipes up from the rack and across the top of the picture rail and then down into the ps pump. I am pretty sure that they should be routed along the bottom of the picture rail frame as that would ma...

series 3 steering wheel replacement

Hi I have an original series 3 steering wheel that I would like to replace as I am not a big fan of its look or its feel Any suggestions for a better looking replacement? I would ideally like a wooden wheel as the earlier marques but the thin rim on most of these puts me off. Alternatively has anyon...

Re: Self adhesive numberplate positioning

Update to my numberplate question Jepsons self adhesive plates are exactly the same as the plates you can buy from Framptons ,they are in effect the same company following a buy out of Framptons by Jepsons some years ago I have benn advised that the method using weak soap solution to fix the plate i...

Re: Self adhesive numberplate positioning

Thanks for all the advice but still confused over whether my number plate is the correct type after previous reply saying that it shouldn't be sticky??
Doesn't the soapy water/window cleaner affect the adhesion of the plate? You can't put a plaster on a wet finger and get it to stick?

Re: Self adhesive numberplate positioning

Hi Just before I make a mess I thought that I would ask the question...probably for the nth time. I have ordered and received a self adhesive number plate from Jepsons for the front of my car. I have seen the advice on here about either Soapy Water or Mr Muscle window cleaner to aid with placement a...

Re: Front ride height/Torsion bars and tool

Just followed the instructions above as my ride height was a little low. I would add that you need to jack up the front to min 350mm above picture rail height and then you can get the extra set on the torsion bars without too much difficulty. By setting as per manual I would never have achieved the ...

Re: RHD / LHD pedals

Alan I converted mine and just bought a rhd clutch lever and re- used the auto(brake lever) I didn't crank the levers at all but instead I fabbed up a couple of new pedals with the bolts set offset. I think I used a 10mm back mark from the side of the pedals which increases the gap between the pedal...

Soft top fitting - anyone have any pictures/advice

Hi I have a new soft-top to fit and as the car I bought didn't have one fitted I am unsure of how to attach it to the car. Does anyone have any photos of how the hood is attached to the rear of the car? Am I right in presuming the @10mm diameter shaped bar goes through the new hood and is simply bol...

FWIW I would argue that there are enough good people out there restoring their cars to factory spec or to the gunmetal with red interior that seems so popular at the moment, that there is room for a few of us to choose the colours we really want  My Inspiration...... http://i1121.photobucket....
