Re: Topping up SU piston dampers

Jeremy The main purpose of the oil is to provide some control over the piston in relation to the damper, which by its very name gives a clue as to its operation. As you increase pressure on the accelerator pedal the piston tries to rise, depending on how fast you press the pedal it can try to rise r...

Re: S2 OTS hardtop can u fit soft top underneath?

Make sure you get the correct clamps that attach to the windscreen when buying a hood. The clips on the hard tops were similar to those used on the S1 hoods, but the clamps on the S2 were slightly different, Barratts used to show both types but not sure if they do now.

Re: carb damper oil

The type of oil used will have an effect as its primary function is to damp out any vibration as the piston lifts and assist the spring in controlling the rate of lift as the throttle is opened. The smoother the lift the better. So in theory a thin oil allows the piston to lift quicker than a thicke...

Re: Weeping Hoses

I was selling Bars Leaks back in the 1960's and never had a single complaint, our motor business was based in Coventry where there were many car manufacturers then, the likes of Jaguar, Triumph, Alvis, Humber, Sunbeam, I could go on. Although not universally known Bars Leaks was the product many man...

Re: Kevlar v Silicone Hoses

Try here, this company developed a lot of the silicone hoses, I've had them fitted to my Lotus for about 9 years and no problems at all. Nice company to deal with and they can supply silicone with the old style outer cover so looks like original but with added benefits of silicone, do a range of Jag...

Chris Not sure if this will be of help, its a dealer training document for Strombergs on a Triumph, but the principle of setting up the choke should be the same, https://www.triumphwedgeowners.org/uploads/3/0/4/2/3042952/_zenith_stromberg_factory_tuning_manual_-_complete.pdf Also not a big fan of ca...

Re: Series 3 2+2 1972 - Ignition Issues

Chris Thanks for the responses to my questions. I think that perhaps the point that strikes me immediately is that whilst a reluctant starter before your current troubles, the car sounded as if it did start and ran reasonably okay. I think like Colin and others that this possibly points more towards...

Robbie
Just spotted this on eBay, although this is a barrel for the ignition, you might use the contact facility to check if they do the door barrels, this item is new and at the price makes it logical to buy rather than refurb.

Re: Series 3 2+2 1972 - Ignition Issues

Chris Can we get a couple of answers first, 1. How did the car start and run before you did any of this work 2. Had the car been left standing for any length of time before doing this work. 3. Why did you need to fit the new vacuum advance? 4. When you started the car after fitting the vacuum advanc...

Re: Refurbishing door handles/locks

Robbie This job is not very difficult at all and probably well within your own expertise. The only thing you need to do is be careful as you remove the tumblers. By using the method I described earlier you can withdraw each of the tumblers one by one and therefore control the little springs. If you ...

Re: Refurbishing door handles/locks

Robbie Inside the lock are the tumblers that are set to give you the code for your key, it is possible to change the tumblers to another sequence, but then you have to find the key that fits that code. To do this you need to put the key into the barrel first which will stop the tumblers from falling...

Re: Refurbishing door handles/locks

Robbie Here is a link to an article on Willmot Breedon locks as fitted by Jaguar, it relates to XK120,140,150, but I think Jaguar continued to use the same keys on the S1 E Type, so it may give you some answers as to which key and style of key fitted where. Also some of the responses talk about havi...

Re: Decoding Triplex glass numbers ?

Bear in mind that there would have been a number of replacement glass manufacturers in the US catering for the stone chipped, cracked screens just like in the UK. In the 1970's we would buy screens from where ever we could get them quickly and fit them ourselves to keep our fleet on the road. Also a...

I am told that health and safety have virtually put an end to production of chrome screws etc in the UK. You can still get them from the USA and E...

Re: Champion plug caps removal

Peter Use a couple of tea spoons under each side of the cap, place the cups of the spoons so the tips are under the cap and with gentle pressure press down on the handles. This will enable you to exert equal pressure each side and hopefully not break anything. The bakelite material they are made fro...
