Re: FACTORY FIT - Series 1 3.8

I believe the original front shocks on 875343 are black as well, but it is difficult to tell with all the rust.

Trying to locate S1 OTS 876024

In November of 2017 I sold my S1 OTS 876024 back to Jaguar. I shipped it from Ontario, Canada to Coventry where my restoration was finished. The completed car was delivered to its new owner, a German collector I am told, sometime in 2019 or early 2020. One of the conditions of sale to Jaguar was tha...

Re: Girling vs Woodhead front shocks: Dazed and confused

Hi Al. Still here. Yes, I repainted my 4298 shocks gray, as David suggested. I managed to find a complete set of original Girling rear shocks for my car, in good condition, but in need of paint. I took one to a local paint shop in Sudbury where they scanned it and made me up two rattle cans of match...

Re: FACTORY FIT - Series 1 3.8

Ian Trapp and I discussed this when he was here looking at my car. He said that while there appeared to be no documentation of the change from black to cad, speculation was that it was only the first hundred or so cars that had black wishbones.

Re: FACTORY FIT - Series 1 3.8

Great information, David. I was under the impression that not all US-bound early cars were shipped with front number plate kits. In 1961, only 17 of the 50 states required a front license plate. Jaguar would have known which state any given car was being sold in before it left the factory. Cheap as ...

Re: FACTORY FIT - Series 1 3.8

Jonathan, thanks for your observations. I did a bit more snooping on the body wire configuration and there are ample grounds for confusion. Firstly, I have seen other lamp bodies with the earthing connector at 3 o'clock rather than 6 o'clock. There are two for sale on eBay right now. One has a date ...

Reverse Lamp Assembly The Lucas model 595 reversing lamp was commonly used by Jaguar, MG, Triumph, Rolls-Royce, and Bentley. Two variants were installed on the early E-type; part number 52570, which employed an amber lens to meet the requirements of the French market, and part number 52567 with a c...

Re: Fishing for Haddock?

I'm with you, Eric. I think I have looked at the second edition of Haddock's book a grand total of twice - once to find a photograph, and again to settle a dispute. It turned out Haddock was wrong. I will probably buy the third edition some day, but I am in no hurry.

Re: Fishing for Haddock?

I guess I could sell my second edition and have enough money to buy two of the current edition. Am I missing something here? BTW, I can save $CAD40.00 by buying the newest version from Motor Books in the UK rather than JCNA in the US. Someone needs to whack JCNA up side the head and say "Yo! It's a ...

Re: Radiomobile 500T

I agree that behind the glove box is a much better location than under the seat or in the boot. That is precisely where the amp for the Autoaire radio in 875343 was installed.

Mark, I have no experience with radio installations on other Jaguar models, and my comments are directed only at an e-type installation. You yourself seem to be somewhat alarmed at the power amp being installed on the floor in front of the driver's seat in your car. I can't think of a more hostile e...

My car, 876024, was factory equipped with a Radiomobile 600T radio. The benefit of this model is that no external amplifier is required - the power output section is self-contained. The 600, 600T, and 602 sometimes come up for sale on eBay. It is cosmetically very close to the 500T, and if you wante...

IMHO, out the bottom is clearly easier. If you try to remove it from the top, no matter what you do you will beat the snot out of the picture frame. The car needs to be a minimum of 30" off the floor. The reaction plate and torsion bars have to come out either way you do it. Just remember to mark th...

These are the tags from the master cylinders on 876024. Maybe this will help a little if you blow up the picture.

Rory, Thanks a ton for the dissertation on the difference between upper and lower cylinders. I am rebuilding mine right now and, sure enough, the pistons were reversed. The brakes on my car, 876024, had behaved a bit oddly but I wrote it off as a side-effect of the fat, sticky tires I had on the car...

Emmanuel, I like the idea of cutting a piece of foam larger than the flap, but I think what I am going to do instead is make some new, heftier strips of foam from a piece that I have. They should make a better seal, be more durable, and will be easier to glue in place. Michel, I don't know who makes...

I understand the function, but J30 differs with respect to whether they are glued to the case, the flap, or the heater core itself. The top tong strip, C18514, is described as "seal on heater radiator seating air control flap when closed." Which means it's supposed to be glued to the core itself but...

S1 heater box rebuild

Okay, I give up. Reassembling my heater box with the Welsh kit is straightforward enough, except for the four 1/2" foam strips, two short and two long. I know one of the long ones is glued along the sheet metal lip next to the flap. But the other three, I can't figure out. They had long since "peris...

painted spare wire wheel

Dumb question of the day. If you ordered chrome wire wheels from the factory, did you get a chrome or painted spare? My car was sold with chrome wires, but the spare in the boot is painted gray. I suspect it came with the car when new, but I can't prove it. Chrome wire wheels were a ?43 option, and ...
