My Dad never threw anything away.

These were originally in cars he bought back in the 1960s and 1970s. https://i.postimg.cc/7P0d1RLn/IMG-20240423-160604492.jpg I have no idea if either work. And these came from a 1972 transit van. https://i.postimg.cc/V6VfjVL8/IMG-20240423-160621181.jpg Looks like I'll be testing these items.

Re: Metallic rasp/rattle under acceleration 2500rpm

I've had something similar. I found the cause was the deterioration of the gearbox mount bush due to hot oil. The sound was the spigot rattling against the gearbox mount.

Other possibilities are the exhaust downpipes rattling against the engine frames.

Re: Cam Cover sealing...again

I use non setting gasket goo, smeered very lightly on both surfaces of the gasket. Then I nip up the nuts until screwdriver tight. Lastly I tighten the lower row of nuts gradually, then the upper row. The nuts are never very tight and can be undone easily. That sorts the gaskets and prevents them fr...

Re: Clutch slave cylinder- delay in retracting

That doesn't look broken. Easy to check, if the clutch pedal is floppy, the spring is fecked. If the pedal remains hard against the pedal box, the spring is doing its job.

Re: Clutch slave cylinder- delay in retracting

BTDT. If there is clutch slip there is only one solution. I blamed the master cylinder and the slave cylinder but that merely avoided the inevitable, and expensive solution. And once I had replaced the clutch and release bearing, and ensured the released fork was true and working freely (a lazy clut...

Re: Valve clearances that change

Causes of valve gap measurememt anomalies , part 2. 2.1 Some shims can develop a small indentation from the valve stem. Annoyingly, this little indentation is just a bit smaller than the anvil on my micrometer. 2.2 More than one of the shims I found on my car's engine were a different size than indi...

"Any input to oil viscocity, gut feeling would be 15-40 or 20-50 on an old, though unworn, engine?" My engine is old and worn. I use 20W60 semi-synthetic. There are a couple of manufacturers making this multi grade specifically for older high performance engines -Jags,Astons, etc. Viscosity is not t...

Re: Oil pressure, one more round

Whether good or bad my engine has survived over 80,000 miles since it's last rebuild with 45-50psi at 2400 rpm (approx 60mph 100kph in top gear) and less than 20psi at idle.

Numbers are approximate but are consistent.

Re: S2 4.2 Cooling

As Danny said, I had just this problem and it was that the fan was wired to push rather than pull air through the radiator. At a standstill it worked, but driving slowly in traffic the air coming through the nose stopped the fan pushing enough air through the radiator to cool the engine. Simple to c...

And I have a single wire alternator (built in regulator). I have all the original bits in an Original...

Re: Hi new member here

When my Lucas M45G starter failed (worn brushes, easily replaced), I replaced the whole starter with a high torque starter. The old Lucas unit is reconditioned, and in a box labelled "Originality", along with the OE dizzie, brake rotors and calipers. The next owner can refit these if he / she wants....

It'll be a few weeks before the car has completed its winter service routine, and for the salt to have been washed away. Let's catch up towards the end of Feb.

Not far from me, about 15 miles.
When the roads are less salty would you like to check a 2+2 for size? (It isn't for sale).

Re: Hello - SW UK

I bought my 2+2 when my two boys were smaller, but didnt change it when they grew up. Now the car is perfect for grandchildren. These days I use the car as a daily driver during the summer, shopping, trips to the recycling centre, as well as days out. It is also used to go so car shows and events. I...

Copper and hide inserts are available for the Thor No 2. Search on your favourite on line market place. Although copper is soft it will damage the Chrome spinners. Lead is better. Those who have used lead mallets for years melt and reform the heads regularly. Keep the chunks that fall off. Search th...

Why buy a new piece of oriental junk when for the same price you can have a tool that has been used by a time served engineer fr...
