Re: Series 3 power steering reservoir.

Left hand side of engine bay, inboard of the engine frame. It has a built in dipstick, slightly awkward access but not too bad. Visible in both photos, the reservoir is the cylindrical shape unit with the filler at the top of the neck protruding from it. https://i.postimg.cc/7Lsrks95/IMG-7095.jpg ht...

Re: Engine Tuning issues Early UK Series 3

So a bit of follow up. I did some research and discovered there are definitely other Pre HE V12 cars that were originally fitted with advance units. The XJ12 Series 2 cars were fitted with distributor 41742A, which is the one that I bought for my car way back in around 2006 or 2007, before I knew an...

Re: Engine Tuning issues Early UK Series 3

Colin, thanks again for the input and offers. I will be very interested in your mods, the GasCat looks seriously cool, how do you feel about making double quantity of everything…!? Just joking of course, but I wish I had the knowledge/skill/confidence to undertake such a project. Whilst I am fairly ...

Re: Engine Tuning issues Early UK Series 3

Hi and once again thank you all for some great input. I have a long weekend coming up so will try to find time to do the following: Confirm timing – Static and dynamic Inspect the distributor weights mechanism – believed to be free, but no harm in checking. Check the lift of each carb piston, believ...

Re: Engine Tuning issues Early UK Series 3

Hi and thanks for all the replies and detail, Firstly, a confession, I knew I should really check compressions and timing before starting, but I did time the car carefully around 7 months ago and it has hardly run since then, so I decided to trust it because I had limited time and wanted the car run...

Engine Tuning issues Early UK Series 3

Hi, Long time since I’ve posted on here, largely because my car wasn’t running well and I got frustrated and concentrated on other projects. The engine was rebuilt by an acknowledged expert. I haven’t done recent compression checks, but believe they are good – I will check when I have more time. Car...

Re: Series 3 Power steering Rack

It’s not actually that difficult to rebuild yourself. I have done it twice to the same rack and yes, I did rebuild it myself a second time because it began leaking after around 8 years of fairly light use. However, I learned the first time that the main issue was damaging the inner seals when re-ins...

Re: V12 Hot coil problem & leaky carburettor

Hi again. I have no experience of the OPUS unit, when restoring the car, I went straight to ReOPUS, sadly no longer available. However, I believe that when the OPUS starts to fail, replacement is the only answer. I’m not convinced that my ReOPUS is performing well now, some ten or eleven years later...

 For a more affordable and (probably) usable option, do as I did and try this: https://i.postimg.cc/pdp6q53n/167350-E8-4-E09-4-D1-B-8248-9-EEA314-CC543.jpg At least they are both (accurately) OTS cars. https://www.showusyaslotz.com.au/products/scalextric-c4062sf-1961-jaguar-e-type-twin-pack-leg...

Re: An interesting state of Model years

Hi, The launch date of the S3 was April 1 1971, but some cars were built before that to build up stock. My S3 FHC (2+2 if you prefer), was built in January 1971 and is the 97th RHD FHC. Like your car, it has the suffix. BW, indicating a Borg Warner auto. To all intents and purposes, both your car an...

Re: Smelling fuel issue

Hi. Another possibility is that the fuel level sensor (or any other item/plate/pump etc.) gasket were “sealed” with the wrong sealant, for example, blue hylomar, which is not impervious to fuel. It impregnates the cork gasket, which, in conjunction with the not suited sealant, then allows vapour pas...

Re: Ally rad and fans, Radtec, NAR, other?

Hi, I don’t have exactly the car/situation you describe, but here’s my experience. I bought an Auto S3, which was missing the radiator. I waited and sure enough, found a manual gearbox (5 Speed) so I bought a new, aluminium radiator for the car, manual version without the Transmission cooler. It was...

Hi Mark, I restored a similar car from a similar condition some time ago. I have lots of photos, but way too many to post on the internet. I started in UK, finished here in Australia. If you pm me I can record a cd/dvd and post ( literally post) from Australia. I will need the address and some time ...

Years back I looked at this company, before deciding to go with my original nice but not perfect set. No affiliation, just the only company I could find who seemed to do it.

Hi Carsten, Beautiful colour, going to be a beautiful car. I’ve followed this for many years, ever since you started posting and I saw you had a 2+2, like my own (even though mine is a S3 V12) glad you nearly there now. I fully remember the excitement when I saw my car in a similar condition to that...

Re: Auto to manual pedal box conversion

Hi. It’s definitely possible and it’s what I did when converting my own car from Auto to 5 speed. I also modified the original brake pedal to re-use it, by cutting it down. The lever had a slight “S” bent into it with heat and hammer. The S allowed the pedal to stay at the same angle as the clutch p...
