Re: Overdrive S3

That’s great information. Thank you all. I will drive it for a few months and decide to exchange the 3.54 for a 2.88. Hopefully I’ll have it back in a month or so. From March 1973, US and Canada cars received the 3.31 drive ratio. Page 92, on section Production Changes, "Original Jaguar E-Type - Re...

Re: Top 10 E-Type models

No worries! And here's me thinking Philip Porter is an acclaimed authority on E-Types! If I ever bump into him I'll point out his error on page 30 of his seminal book. You live and learn.

Re: Top 10 E-Type models

No, they did not. Hi, I may be mistaken but I am pretty sure that the very last 3.8s produced were supplied with the same gearbox as used on the succeeding 4.2s. Not only have I been informed of this by varying experts over the last 30 years but even the author Philip Porter of "Original E-Type" fa...

Top 10 E-Type models

Hi, Probably discussed previously but I thought - to kick-start some light-hearted discussion as we head into the weekend - I'd share my thoughts on the "best overall" standard production E-Type models based on the combination of aesthetics, dynamics, practicality, and desirability (but avoiding per...

Re: US only side indicators/flashers

Hi Marek,
Thanks for your swift reply, much appreciated. Do you have any photos of the clear indicators that you make, or a website link you can steer me towards? Are they the same size as the original lenses or are the smaller / slimmer in size? Thanks.

US only side indicators/flashers

Hi, I am looking for discussion threads on replacing the US only side / indicator lights with smaller, more discrete units. I searched the forum but could not find any threads on this topic. I was wondering if anyone is aware of any solutions out there (other than welding up the holes to return to E...

Reputable UK or Dutch based E-Type specialists sought

Hi, I am seeking advice on which reputable E-Type specialists to use for some light bodywork and mechanical work on my S3 E-type. Obviously there is E-Type UK but who else might I consider using? I am looking for a good balance between confirmed quality of work and reasonable expense, and with a kno...

Purpose of rear aluminium plate on S2 & S3 models?

Hi, I'm wondering if there is a specific purpose for the aluminium plate at the rear of the S2 and S3 cars? i.e. upon which the larger rear light housing and number plate are attached. I mean other than perhaps for (dubious) aesthetic reasons ? I see a number of cars have had these alu cover/plates ...

Re: XJ6 versus E Type

An early Series 1 4.2 SWB XJ model with MOD and 3.31 diff ratio is a whole different proposition and driving experience than a later Series 3 XJ LWB with the BW 3 speed slushbox and 2.88 diff; for both 4.2 and 5.3 litres. No doubt the Series 3 cars were better all round cars than the very early Seri...

I recognise that boat! Isn't it one of the "ships" enlisted by the UK Government as part of their back up plan to keep trade flowing across the Channel ....

Sorry, couldn't resist!

Re: XJ6 versus E Type

Hi Geoff, I owned at the same time a Series 1 4.2 FHC Etype and an XJ6 4.2 series 1 manual with overdrive. As mentioned above they are quite different in character and purpose. However, let's not forget that the XJ6 was originally meant to be the sporting saloon version of the E-Type. Jaguar even pl...

4 speed manual to OD conversion

Hi, I've been trawling the Upgrade forum and I came across a few mentions of folks converting their standard 4 speed manual to have overdrive. That surprised me as I always thought that the V12 torque would place too much strain on a transmission with O/D. I have to admit that if an O/D conversion (...

Original 1972 Minilites

Hi, I have an opportunity to purchase original Jaguar minilites especially ordered by the 1st US owner of a 1972 S3 etype OTS. There are in good condition with no damage to rims. Hi Technical issues aside....its your car do as you want. As to originality...I think thats only relevant if you plan to sell the car in the next 10 years...and in any case keep the original parts so it can be swapped back if needed. The etype evolved in lots of ways during its life...if you are ha...

Replacing S2/S3 rocker switches with toggle switches

Hi, Had an original thought or perhaps not so original? Let's see. Must folks would agree that the toggle switches are the main highlight of the S1 dashboard, although the start motor and key slot are a nice touch also. Howabout using some milled alu front casing (as in early S1s) along the lower st...

Hi Geert,

I have the same window/hood gap issue you describe with the V12 OTS I bought also. Can you advise if were able to solve the problem?
