Re: Series 1 rear brake callipers
Just drop out the IRS and fit new piston assemblies into the callipers. Not worth resealing 50+ year old units since the will most probably be worn and corroded inside. Most of the Jaguar suppliers sell them and all looked very similar to me when I replaced those on my ’66 S1. As others have said, w...

Re: Series 2, 2+2 tracking check
I use the Gunson Trackrite to check wheel alignment on my vehicles at home.
It will have paid for itself after you have used it a few times and the E type steers superbly after being tracked on this simple device.

Re: Two ear wheel spinners?
Thanks very much for your advice, everyone.
There is a chroming company very close to me in Kent.
I am unlikely to be using the E much over next few months so this is the ideal time to have the original set restored.

Two ear wheel spinners?
I am thinking of purchasing a set of new wire wheel spinners for the original wire wheels on my series 1. I see many suppliers offering sets of four as two pair. I remember reading some grumbles about the quality of reproduction wire wheel spinners. My original spinners fit very well and i do not ha...

Re: Manual Box with 2.88 Rear Axle
Hi Keith. I can’t recall having to use first around town other than to pull away. Forth gear is responsive and smooth from 30mph. If your car pulls like you say in second, I can’t see you having a problem either. I changed the complete differential in its case, so it was an easy task. The 2.88:1 dif...

Re: Manual Box with 2.88 Rear Axle
I converted my 66 2+2 from the 3.54:1 diff to 2.88:1 a few years ago. This conversion transformed the car from a buzzy noisy drive on faster roads to a relaxed drive still with plenty of torque. Third is now a fantastic overtaking gear. Previously 3000revs in 4th gear was around 64mph and now 3000rp...

Re: 2+2 rear anti roll bar
I also had this problem when I rebuilt my 1966 2+2 IRS 18months ago. The rear anti roll bar rubber bush supplied by SNG was too large for the roll bar. I called them with measurements and they found a rubber bush that fitted saying it came form the earlier XK model. My IRS had never been out of the ...

Re: Clutch problems.
Hi All. Thanks very much to all for your comments and Steve for the chat. Success! After checking if it was possible for the master cylinder piston to move the last part of its travel back into the slave with the clutch pedal fully at the top of its travel, and it wasn’t. I came to the conclusion it...

Clutch problems.
I have a 66 series 1. I suffer from cultch slip. The scenario goes like this… Clutch starts to slip. Pedal hard up against the stop and much higher than brake pedal. This does not allow the clutch to fully engage and thus slip. I loosen the lock nut on the slave cylinder push rod and wind the push r...
Re: Soldering
Hi. Soldering can be difficult with large objects especially with an inadequate iron. Some of the soldering guns, especially those that heat by working as a transformer and passing a large current have a tip with a very small thermal mass, so the heat they do generate is very quickly transferred to ...

Re: Electric power steering
A friend of mine has just fitted this system to a TR7 and is pleased with the outcome.
He said there were no problems with the fitting. The amount of assistance is adjustable and nothing is visible under the bonnet.

Re: LHD Facia panels?
I have a pair of original dashboard facia panels from my 1966 series 1 2+2. You are right that the panels that take the chrome rotary control for the air vent are difficult to find especially for the 2+2 with the glove box lid. The ones I have are in good condition and have all the components remove...

Thanks Tom.
I am intending to do the same swap as you. My replacement 2.88 is also not leaking and all looking good on the inside. So, fingers crossed.

Re: Series one Independent rear suspension (IRS) overhaul?
Thank you all for this great advice. Exactly what I was hoping for. Much better to go into a job like this with some guidance. I will certainly ask for the superior Timken bearings and fit all new brake pipes and hoses. Very interesting info on early and later diffs. Seems sensible to replace all th...

Re: Series one Independent rear suspension (IRS) overhaul?
Oh yes, half shaft UJ’s, of course. Now added. And thanks for the tip on the felt seal swap for lip type. I‘ve also added anti role bar bushes to the list. Thank you for the advice on the handbrake compensator and brake bleed extenders and pics too. I see you have vented discs on the rear. My rear b...

Series one Independent rear suspension (IRS) overhaul?

It looks very much like it has never been out of the car before. Everything is just about working including the handbrake although the brakes were marginal on t...

Re: door locks
My 66 2+2 has separate door locks too.
I remember reading somewhere that the series 1 2+2 were made like this.
I can't think why Jaguar would have done this but I am sure someone on here will know?
