Re: Rust Removal using Phosphoric Acid
Is there an argument against using etch primer? I use it simply because everybody I know does so. I'm told it will resist rust because it is acid-based. I have no clue if this is correct or not - I am as ignorant as the next man about this subject. In fact, have we even reached a consensus after al...

Re: Rust Removal using Phosphoric Acid
No, I'm talking about restoring old cars.
The PPG restoration manual I linked to is aimed at the serious hobby restorer. I am, or was a hobby restorer who also happened to work on the design of industrial paint systems and have managed to successfully apply some of that knowledge to my restorations.

Re: Rust Removal using Phosphoric Acid
Etch primer is old tech. There have been much better methods available for years. And you should never apply etch primer over a phosphate treatment in any case. There is an awful lot of nonsense on car forums and even from professional bodyshop people regarding painting. If you want to listen to tho...

Re: Rust Removal using Phosphoric Acid
I haven't read this whole thread and I'm not a chemist but I do have over 30 years experience in the OEM automotive finishing industry and a lot more years as a hobby car restorer. There's a lot more to preparing steel for painting than merely applying phosphoric acid and I don't intend to outline i...

Re: Pippa's Wedding Car
When Kilgannon owned it it was an absolute wreck, and IIRC the deal was that the ( then ) JDHT funded the restoration on condition that it owned the car, but Kilgannon should have access to it. If you have seen it, it is not in fact a particularly distinguished car, sadly There is an interesting ar...

Re: Slop on window-winding handle
You can pry up the tabs on the winder gear and swap it for one from any contemporary saloon, preferably from a rear window mechanism. I did both windows on my 3.8 that way.

Re: Steering Column Help please!!
.....Apart from the location of the bracket for holding the switch and cover on, which appears to be further back from the end than mine, it looks to be the same inner column. So what I am thinking is that I will have to remove that bracket anyway, to mount on the other side for a RHD and I can rem...

Re: Steering Column Help please!!
Here's a LHD column I have from about a '65 car for comparison. (The notes apply to a previous thread.) The vertical position of the inner column can be established by the mark on the inner made by the grounding contact (in the lower opening). http://i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q670/a_mechanic/Jagu...

Re: Gearbox numbers - matching or not
If your car is an early '62, the factory record keeping (and therefor the certificate information) was not stellar (presumably because of the rush to meet demand at that time) so I wouldn't worry too much about it. More importantly, how does the Moss box shift and how does it sound because most repl...

Re: Recommendation for a Decent Workshop Manual
Oh well, clearly I shouldn't have been working on my cars . The Haynes guides are just that... guides. There is a great deal of precision information - and drawings - contained in the workshop manuals which is not in the Haynes Maybe you're right in that case. As I said, when I did eventually purch...

Re: Recommendation for a Decent Workshop Manual
Agree. Get the factory manual. Haynes is ahem...just a guide.... I don't know about the later cars or +2s but for the earlier cars, the Haynes is perfectly adequate. I did a total nut and bolt restoration, every single part, of my '62 using only the Haynes manual (and this was before the internet f...

Re: Which panel?
The cut-outs don't provide much useful access to the brakes but they're probably better than nothing, so I'd go for that version so long as you have the cover plate because someone was posting recently that they're unavailable.

Re: British Princess Nina Aga Khan E type
It's hard enough to get a V5 with everything in place, so good luck to the new owner with that ! I think it should end up registered as a kit car using the DVLA points system ! If it ever gets built up again it will still be a kit car since there's now a permanent record of what it started off as h...

So long as you don't need one right away, I have a brand new one, never used, not cheap though, and another needing rebuilding. http://i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q670/a_mechanic/Jaguar-misc/P1020407_zpswkbt6p1b.jpg http://i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q670/a_mechanic/Jaguar-misc/P1020410_zpsfojcpty...

Re: Milan Auction RMSothebys - 21 E-Types under the hammer ?
I asked the same question as you, Peter, and was told that the Bill Of Sale came in the name of the Italian State and that this gave you Clear Title - and subsequent debate could only be between the "claimer" and the State ? Maybe so long as the car stays in Italy. If the actual ownership was to be...

[*] the best bit about it is the ability to edit posts,[*]
That, and the ability to include photos (same as here). I think that is a big improvement. The E-Type section has a practice thread running right now for people to test out the feature.

Re: Milan Auction RMSothebys - 21 E-Types under the hammer ?
Perhaps a lead towards understanding what documents a buyer will end up with ? Most of the cars in that auction that I viewed simply had a bill of sale. But then I've purchased numerous vehicles, including an E-Type with no documents, just a receipt from the seller and never had a problem. Just bec...
