Re: Seat belts OTS

Michel, just for your safety. The threaded holes you show in your pic are in a very low position for the rear anchorage of the belt. And they are also positioned much to the centre of the car. In an accident the belt will press you downwards and inwards over your throut. The position that the jaguar...

Re: Replacement steering wheel surround.

Hi all, now I also got a steering wheel wood surrounding from Nick. It looks very nice. I have couple of questions though. I am thinking of using epoxy to glue the halfs together, is that suitable? What kind of lacquer on the wood is the best? I assume that the aluminium is bare with no anodizing, j...

Re: Bumper fitment dilemma

I had the same on my car. The front bumpers had too small radius.
I grinded them in the front and the rear and rechromed them. I used a small air driven belt sander when grinding.

Re: Gearbox internal compatibility

The JBN box seems to be in good condition so can´t get this idea out of my head. And it will soon be gearbox/engine out anyway. Its a friend of mine who owns it, I have the box on my workbench for inspection already. I´m thinking of picking the gearkluster/gears and depending on condition, perhaps t...

Gearbox internal compatibility

Hello I have an EJ gearbox with new bearings that in my opinion is to noisy on the first three gears. I have now the possibility to buy a JBN box with OD. It´s an all synchro from an S-type. My plan is to pick the gears from the JBN and put them in my EJ box. I am aware of the difference in mainshaf...

Re: A materials question

This is an old thread I know. But I started to sand my heater air intake before respray yesterday. I saw the light grey easy sanding material coming up and I stopped quickly when asbestos came up in my mind. Am I wrong with my thoughts?

Re: Insulation on exhaust hoses

No one can be sure if the fire had started anyway. But remember the pipes are hotter if they are wrapped. And the wrap soak up the oil. Its like a flambeau( correct word?)
My engine was not what I call hot when this happened either. I was idling in a traffic jam for while when this happened.

Re: Insulation on exhaust hoses

Wrapping is nice to reduce the heat. I have tried it on stainless pipes. The stainless pipes will be a bit ugly of it but that is probably a minor problem for most of us. Downside, it increases the risk of fire. A leakage of oil on the wrapping is enough to start a fire. I have lost a car with wrapp...

Re: Windscreen shape and width OTS

Yes, the thread mentioned was mainly about FHC windscreens. But I have now contacted Nick Gardiner at Pilkington and he confirms that 1281mm is the nominal width. They have now a width tolerance of +-3mm on new manufactured windscreens to my car. And my old windscreen is probably the original one, I...

Re: Windscreen shape and width OTS

Before you look at buying another, have you tried fitting the newer one? I have tried both but no one of them have an acceptable fit, but the old one fits slightly better. I need to do adjustments in the car but I need to know what is correct. It is still no paint on the car so its doable:  ...

Windscreen shape and width OTS

I have besides my old scratched windscreen a new one. Well it is not a new windscreen, but it is never used and it is bought by the previous owner probably in the 90´s. My problem is that my two windscreens are not identical. The new one is 8mm wider from the left to the right between the lower "edg...

Often it's of interest to read how problems in a thread are solved...
Finally I bought a new main shaft from Dennis Welsch Motorsport.
My gearbox is now restored and ready!
Thank you!

Re: Is my bonnet missing a bit??

I took a picture of my 1966 bonnet. You can clearly see the holes for the studs. My chrome grill looks the same as yours, with both studs and lower fixation.

Re: Main shaft issue

Bill, sorry if it was unclear written. It is an oil hole in the centre of the original main shaft. In Dennis Welch main shaft the centre hole is smaller than in the original one.

Thanks for the tip about hard chrome. I will check it out with a suitable workshop.

Re: Main shaft issue

Thank you for the response! Yes I realize that the surface for the needles must be hardened. One possibility is to use a needle bearing inner ring, it will have the correct hardness. I have found a suitable ring with 1" outer diameter and 13/16" inner. Means that I have to grind the main shaft down ...

Main shaft issue

Hello I have my syncro gearbox under restoration. Between the main shaft and the constant pinion shaft there is a needle bearing. This bearing have made a lot of wear on the main shaft. I was thinking of grind the surface on the main shaft down and after that press a sleeve on it in order to create ...

Re: Titanium exhaust system.

Go for titanium. I don't know what my experience is worth as it's not from an E-type but my previous car was a Corvette Z06 with the stock titanium cat back system. It´s incredible lightweight. My experience is that it´s not the same sound as in a typical stainless system. The pipes that are closest...
