Re: Needles for SU carb conversion

"I'm not confident in my abilities to get exactly the right amount of material removed, in the right place, 4 times for each needle. I'd feel much more comfortable buying needles that are close, even if they are not perfect. Close is good enough in this case." You are right. SU or Burlen offers dif...

Re: Engine Tuning issues Early UK Series 3

I think the missfiring can (?) caused by lean mixture. The detect this, you need a wideband lambda measuring system in the car. You have to measure the mixture at driving, NOT at iddle. IF (?) the air filter, the motor and the exhaust system is original and the original carb-needles are mounted, you...

Re: Engine Tuning issues Early UK Series 3

Why do you ask an idiot like a car-machanic about advance or retard ? Read a book like "Otto-Motor Management" from BOSCH ! Written from a lot of high qualified car engineers. In this book is a written, that before programmable ignitions, nearly every motor between 1960 und 1980 had an ADVANCE capsu...

Re: Needles for SU carb conversion

I am driving a EV12 with a 6,0L motor from an XJ81 and have 20 years of experince with carb-tuning and needle shaping. The car has now 4 originial EV12 Stromberg carbs and 4 taylor-made needles. The correct AFR for idle is 12.5 to 14:1. The correct AFR for light cruise can be AFR 15 - 17: 1. I am dr...

Mybe (?) each of the front wheels have worn out uneaven. Change the wheels from front to back and the back wheels to the front. Make again a test-drive on a bad street. Maybe the problems disappeare. I have bought a Gunsons trackrite tool. A german oldtimer magazine has compared the results with a p...

Re: 2+2 front seat belts

Years ago I met a guy, who was a car ingeneer at Volkswagen for safety belts and air bags. He immediately told me, that the normal steel aprts of the belt system beside the seats are too long. They touch the 'bone of the hip' if you have a crach and will destroy/crack the bone. He told my to mount a...

When i was running on Stromberg's it would not run under 6% CO when on SU carbs it needed to be at least 4.5% the lambda was never anyway near 1.0 a vast i...

I am far away to be a spezialist for shimmng hubs. Is it possible, that there shall be an endfloat, because , if the bearing is becomming warm when driving, the endfloat is becomming zero or will become a pre-load ?

Re: A mixture question

The mixter is depending on the circular cleft betwwen the needle and the jet. If you adjust the mixture lean at throttle, this ich changing the mixture at part or full throttle not so much. Maybe (?) the needle or the jets are worn. Then the cleft is becommimg bigger and the mixture is becomming too ...

Re: S3 Brake fluid draining from higher reservour to lower reservour

I had the same problem. A rubber / plastic piston-seal of the brake-piston of the brake-cylinder, on which you press the food was damaged and the brake-liquid moved from one circuit the the second circuit. Very quick the lower 'bottle' was overfilled und the upper 'bottle' was empty. A damaged (rust...

Re: Webers or Fuel Injection

At most of the time, my 6,0L HE motor at small part throttle and medium part throttel is running with a lambda of roundabout 1,05 to 1.10. When crusing with this mixture, an injectet car can't take much less gas. 5% les would be a great number. My car is driving when crusing with roundabout 18 - 20 ...

Re: Webers or Fuel Injection

"Also complicating things, I’m challenging myself to make it a “bolt-on” upgrade that will work on any efi V12. The secret is liquid (not gas) injection, at least 10% more power that with petrol, 50% reduction in fuel costs and Euro 5 or better emissions. Can’t do that with carbs. So imo, if you ar...

Hello Colin, "I find your comments very enlightening as I was also considering injection, however straight pipes to the airbox and possibly SU's or a setup on a rolling road for the Strombergs looks like a better option all being considered." If you mount two pipes with a bigger diamter to the airfi...

I have mounted the Getrag 265 with 5 gears. The fifth is 1: 0,81, therefore an "overdrive".

I am driving a Series III since 20 years. If you want to improve the power output an the reliability, make these changes: 1. Don't do EFI. It is a long way, until it will work good. Marek has done it. His motor is running very good But Marek is intelligent, has a lot of knowledge and experience. 99%...
