Re: opus ignition system
I put the SNG Barratt system in my 73 V12 and it made a significant difference. The car starts quick and runs significantly smoother. Not outrageous cost wise (I guess that's relative), after the core charge was returned it was about $650 for everything. It took me roughly 6 hours to get it all put ...

Re: s3 hot starting problem
I recently went to the SNG Barratt ignition system and it does make a significant difference in starting, both hot and cold. (particularly when hot) If your having a cranking issue then I would look to the cooling system but if its cranking fine and just not firing when hot its probably the ignition...

Re: Lost / Homeless cables behind the dashboard
Stefan, probably a process of elimination but I'd start by trying to match the color codes to the wiring diagram. I have found them to be very accurate.

Re: Ported Vacuum Source
Dennis, hope you don't mind but i'd like to pile onto your post. My car had no vacuum line attached to the dizzy when I bought it. I've now replaced the complete ignition system with a SNG Barratt system and have adjusted everything with no vacuum line attached. The engine is running great, smooth i...

Re: Fuel gauge not registering properly
My bet would be the sender has some corrosion on it. I'd pull it from the tank and check it out. Just by cleaning it a little you should get a few more years.

Re: Dumping coolant some time after switching off.
Interesting adding a fixed orifice to manage the recirc. Thats what we do in the oil industry. Have you put a temperature gun on the recirc line and then other place on the engine to see if the temps are close. That would likely tell you if you sized the orifice right.

Re: Dropping the IRS
Nice, cantilevering the rear end off the lift will sure make it easier!!! I have a number of wood dollies so I'll just build a quick frame to put on top of two of them. Thanks for the tip!!

Re: Dropping the IRS
Thanks for all of the tips. I have a great shop with all of the equipment. I will have to figure out how to do this with the 4 poster (i'm thinking I support the car as Philip did but off the lift runners and then lower the IRS on my jack with some thick plywood underneath it so I can roll it out) B...

Philip, thanks. Much shorter than what I had anticipated from reading other posts. Its an early next year project for me.

Just curious, how many hours did it take to remove the unit?

Re: Non charging s3 alternator
Tony, the red plastic thing on the back is your brush holder and I have been told you can do both the brushes and diodes in place. For me however I always find it easier to take things like this off the car so I don't mess something else up!! Other than the inside pivot bolt where you have to be a l...

Re: Non charging s3 alternator
Turns out I had a dead alternator early this year and wound up buying a rebuilt one off ebay. To confirm I got the wires right I traded notes with the rebuilder and he sent me this: "The important thing on the field input is the blue block and the red block on the brush holder. The blue block is neg...

Thanks for the quick reply!!! I think I'll pipe them together and send them to the bottom of the trunk somewhere. I'd prefer not to have gas splashing around in there again

New Fuel Pump
With a new ignition system my engine is great so I finally had the car inspected yesterday so now I'm legal  I put around 50 miles on it this weekend running around the island looking for issues; have some suspension vibration to deal with but other than that the car is running well. On the ...

Re: My timing challange
Simon, thanks again for the tips. I'm traveling right now but will figure out the vacuum deal as soon as I get home in 10 days. I suspect my car was set up on a California spec (the worst in the US). Its been in Hawaii all of its life however and I'm only the 3rd owner. I picked it up 6 months ago f...

Re: My timing challange
Simon, one other item I forgot to address. I have no vacuum line going to my distributor and as far as I can tell the advance mechanism on the old distributor never had one. Is this normal or a problem? The instructions for the Barratt system said connect the vacuum hose "if" your car has one? I was...

Re: My timing challange
Simon, thanks for the tips. I did pull the distributor again yesterday and started from scratch. Embarrassed to say my initial installation must have been off by one cog because when I finished this time the car started right up. I had no problem turning over the motor with a large 7/8's wrench I ha...

My timing challange
My amplifier died so I decided to upgrade to a SNG Barratt distributor system. Installation was relatively easy but I can't figure out a timing issue i'm having. My old wires were 180 degrees out (rotor pointed to 6B instead of 1A) so I decided to put it back to normal. Found the compression stroke ...

Re: Gauge issue
I'd start by checking the instrument voltage regulator. If that's going weird however I would also expect the fuel gauge to also react.

Re: Something electrical died
Paul, Bill, Dave and Simon, thanks for the quick responses. I've spend a few days reading posts and websites and also traded notes with Dave from ReOpus who confirmed he was no longer producing new units. After looking at the cost of the SNG unit it made real sense to change over to their system so ...
