Re: One cylinder flooding when starting from cold

I’m pleased to report that I have finally found the source of the problem. I had not set the “Fast Idle Setting” correctly (19.15.02 in the Repair Operation Manual). The problem bank had the setting screw screwed right in and the gap B was as large as it could be. The other bank was set to 25 thou. ...

Re: One cylinder flooding when starting from cold

Thanks to all for all the tremendous advice on where to go looking. The weather was kind here yesterday so I had my car out and had a play. I was particularly intrigued by the comments from Allrand and Abowie about my starting technique. I’ve only had the car for 40 years and have always used the ch...

Re: One cylinder flooding when starting from cold

Thank you all for your replies, these really help. I did some more investigation and noticed that the strobe light shows that the 5A spark plug starts firing on the overrun. It was very clear, turn the throttle up (using the top of the throttle pillar) to circa 3k rpm (no spark) and then let it drop...

One cylinder flooding when starting from cold

I’m struggling with a frustrating problem and would appreciate any advice. My car starts from cold easily; I leave the fuel pump on for a few seconds until you can hear the return one-way valve operating, then full “choke” and accelerator down. The problem is that usually one spark plug isn’t firing...

Sticking Brakes in the hot weather

I have just had the pleasure of taking my Daughter to her wedding at Lincolns Inn Chapel in the very centre of London. As you can imagine this was perhaps a bit mad given the current hot weather but a fabulous experience none the less. She (my daughter and the car) attracted a lot of attention, all ...

Tachometer reading full scale intermittently

The tachometer on my Series 3 OTS has developed an intermittent fault where it goes to full scale (7000 rpm) and stays there. It has returned back to normal so far after several minutes. Tapping the tachometer doesn’t seem to effect this. Has anyone experienced this before and does it sound more lik...

Re: Which Way Round

Im interested to know how you plan to attach the seal into the channel. Which adhesive and which sides?
I have just replaced my seal and not convinced I have this correct.

BBC Breakfast E type

My family thought that the BBC Breakfast news item this morning (07.25) about the E Type being 60 was hilarious because everyone interviewed was called......Nigel.

Well worth a visit to iPlayer. Some great old footage. Im not sure what was so funny.......

Installing OTS Side Windows

I am going to change the side windows in my Series 3 OTS. This will require separating the old glass from the channels (which I want to reuse) and installing the new glass. I will be using new Door Glass Channel Seals (BD4714). Any advice on this will be very much appreciated.

Re: cilinder numbering V12

Eric, I hope the following helps. The leads that I purchased were all clearly labelled as a set. I strongly recommend labelling yours or purchasing a made up set with labelling. In addition there should be plastic spacers (4) for each group of three leads; 1A/2A/3A, 1B/2B/2C, etc. The leads then are...

Re: S3 wiring loom main bulkhead grommet

When replying to the original text I noticed that there was another post about this which included a photo of the grommet full assembled. When restoring my car I managed to reuse the original (also minus one of the plastic pieces) so it isn't great but had no alternative. if anyone manages to find a...

Re: S3 wiring loom main bulkhead grommet

Drewpy, I tried and failed to find the grommet when I rebuilt my Series 3. Mine was also in pretty poor state. There are I believe there are two solid plastic inserts which secure the flexible rubber in position. At least that is what I found. Very interested to see how this develops. I would like t...

Re: Stromberg jet height

An update on my progress with the Strombergs on my car. The proper tools for adjusting the jet height arrived very promptly from Skandix in Germany. There is the press itself and also a “depth setting gauge” which has two ends for two different depth settings These were very straight forward to use ...

Re: Stromberg jet height

Doug, NigelD, many thanks for reposting the link to the proper tools for setting the jet height. I had missed this previously. I have just placed an order for 1037412 and 1037414 which looks to be what I will need to do this even with carbs in situ. (I had planned to take the carbs off today so just...

Re: Stromberg jet height

Nigel ( I'm yet another Series 3 Nigel owner), I have been having problems setting the idle on my car, hence all my posts. I eventually measured the depth of the jets (which I had replaced when rebuilding my car). Mine are set a bit too high at .070 inch 1.5mm below the bridge as measured to the out...

Re: Stromberg Temperature Valves

Thanks Sven. If they are set closed, is the idle then set with the throttle valve being just a bit more open? (I presume this will then compensate for the loss of additional airflow past the throttle valve when open). By screwing down the adjuster screw inside the temperature compensator, I assume t...

Stromberg Temperature Valves

Im still not satisfied with the idle setting on my car but learning a lot. I would like to take the temperature valves out of the equation but not so as to permanently destroy them ie so not just by bending the bi-mettallic strip (just in case I decide to put them back). I presume they need to be se...

Re: V12 Overheating: The contributing factors

Philip, many thanks for a very informative summary. I dont have a problem with overheating but this will help hugely if ever this arises. The only non standard addition I have is a wire from the unused rocker switch to the relay so I can manually turn on the fanes if ever required.

Engine tone beating under acceleration

I took my car out yesterday for a long drive and Im pleased to report that she is going very well. Pulls all through the rev range (went to 5.5k) and didnt miss anywhere. One thing that I am aware of is that the engine tone has a low frequency “beat” to it (circa 1/2 second). It is only apparent whe...
