Re: Laycock de Normanville

It is highly likely the torque in the lower gears will destroy the Overdrive fairly quickly.

It’s very rare for any car to have overdrive on 1st & 2nd but some have it on 3rd & 4th.

I have overdrive on 4th only & don’t miss it on the other gears.

Good luck with the installation

Re: Capacity and compression ratio increase

Hi, Happy to be corrected but I looked at the 6.0 4 speed Auto gearbox however I think it's controlled either by it's own ECU or via the Engine ECU so fitting could be more onerous, plus they are reasonably hard to find? If fitting an XJS Engine you will also need to consider the Thermostat Housings...

Re: Capacity and compression ratio increase

Hi, Whilst I've stored my original E-Type Engine, Auto Box & 3.07 Diff for when I either restore, sell or stop using the car for long summer road trips currently I'm currently running a late (1989) HE Engine from an XJS as it comes with the 'lip seal' rear crank seal (the Marelli Ignition Engine). T...

Re: Evans Waterless Coolant

Hi, I run waterless coolant in a performance Westfield Track Car & it's absolutely fabulous however that's pushing an engine to it's limit for an extended period of time so not quite the same conditions as a road going E-Type. For my Series 3 V12 I run conventional Antifreeze / Water with a totally ...

Re: Running Temperature etc

Hi, I've just returned from a 2900 mile road trip to Sicily & through all of France & Italy (including the slow drive along the Amalfi Coast) the car temperature rarely moved from the 'N' of Normal. The hottest it got was travelling up Mt Etna in 38 Degree ambient at around 1500 rpm in 3rd Gear & th...

Re: Cable/Hose

Hi,

On my UK car this pipe just vents from the fuel breather tank (by fuel filler) to atmosphere above the rear IRS cage.

I know this as I removed the fuel tank & dropped the IRS last week to do some work & confirmed the fuel pipe routes before I removed things.

Hope this helps.

Dave.

Re: Rear Brake Bleeding 1971 Series 3 V12

Hi Des, Great news you have a good brake pedal feel & that replacing the rear flexible appears to have improved the situation. My front brakes bled exactly as I would have expected them to (as it appears did yours) however I replaced all my flexible lines with Goodrich when I re-commissioned the car...

Re: Rear Brake Bleeding 1971 Series 3 V12

Hi Des, This is not uncommon when changing the Servo as I had exactly the same problem. If you have access to a 'pressure system' such as the Gunson Easibleed it makes this very easy as it pushes the fluid through the system from the reservoir to the rear brakes. Without it you will get exactly what...

Re: Engine Hoist Chain Length

Hi Nigel,

Have you removed the top frame rail (behind the radiator) as I didn't have to lift my engine particularly high to get it out once this was removed?

Re: Laycock de Normanville

Hi,

Another positive vote for O/D Spares in Rugby, this is where I got all the parts for my uprated rebuild.

Dave definitely prefers to discuss by phone & he's picked up both times I have called him in the last week.

If time zones allow give him another call on Monday?

Good luck,

Dave.

Hi Jerome,

I sent my original Butec Alternator back as Part Exchange, Marek may still have spares though?

Good luck in your search.

Re: s3 auto to manual conversion.

Hi Rob, I've had the dubious pleasure of personally having done both of these conversions on my Series 3 V12. The good thing is if a UK car you are highly likely to already have a 3.07 Diff (as I did) so even a standard 4 speed would probably be bearable however if you have the option of an Overdriv...

Re: Over excited soon to be owner

Hi Martin, Congratulations on the recent acquisition, it looks exactly like mine should, shiny red with a Webasto! Another vote from me for the Opus Ignition Module being the reason for poor hot starting, I'd definitely be looking there if I were you. Sadly the biggest issue for you will be both the...

Re: Servo master cylinder

Hi, The servo unit actually comes out in a forward direction towards the top so there is no requirement to jack the car up however if the front wheel is removed it would definitely be easier. If you have a bad back probably the most challenging issue will be all the work is low down & you will proba...

Re: S3 with 2.88 diff

Hi, If it helps I'm running 215/65 R15 tyres (V Rated) all round & these appear to be a good alternative. The thing to be very careful of is to ensure you get 'V Rated' Tyres as there are very few 205/70 R15 tyres that comply with this as many were produced suitable for vans? Whilst I don't have a d...

Re: Prescott Hill

Hi Malcolm, I would agree that the noise you heard at Prescott is unlikely to be the diff as the frequency was too high, I would hazard a guess that it is more likely to be something like the Propshaft bolts hitting the crossmember behind the gearbox? As mentioned by others if the rubber collar on t...

Re: S3 with 2.88 diff

Hi, Having also done something similar you have every reason to be excited, I moved from BW Auto to Getrag 5 Speed both using the 3.07 Auto Difff. I then fitted the 2.88 diff with the Getrag 5 Speed & have now moved to 4 Speed with OD whilst retaining the 2.88 Diff. I have kept all the original part...

Re: Something electrical died

Hi, I had a similar problem with mine after being stood for 25 years. It was fine for about 3 months with regular short duration starting & running to move it whilst it was being re-commissioned then it simply died & would not restart. After extensive investigation my issue was faulty Opus Module (p...

Replacement Butec Alternator

Hi, I'm hoping someone may be able to assist with a spare alternator they may be willing to sell or any advice regarding a source for rebuild parts as since I took the car out of storage last weekend unfortunately the Alternator appears to no longer be charging despite all being fine when stored. I ...
