Re: S1 4.2 gearbox bellhousing bung

Now fill the holes?

May I suggest two not at all D shaped rubber bungs - aka blanking grommets, pro-tem?

Re: FACTORY FIT - Series 1 3.8

An April first specimen methinks... Being left-handed but somewhat ambidextrous runs in my father’s family. ‘Seams’ I could have earned double time at Jaguar, and quadruple on holidays :-) As to Wagstean’s point, it would be interesting to know if the extra metal was equal on both sides - indicating...

Re: S1 4.2 oil level

No XK engine is installed level AFAIK. They should all slope slightly rearward, so the crank and propshaft form a straight line. The car needs to be level but not the sump. Some of Jaguar’s old brochures had ‘ghost’ drawings at the back in the Specifications section. They show the tilt quite well. I...

Re: Black flag, or half mast?

Almost, Christopher. Motor Cycle and then Motorcycle News were the two postwar weekly newspapers that I started reading in 1969. Pre-war it was The Motor Cycle and Motorcycling. I can never remember which was which, or which one Graham Walker (an ex TT racer) edited but they were known by the colour...

Black flag, or half mast?

“Oh dear oh dear. That’s a black flag for Walker, who was going so well until that incident. And look at that! - He’s smiling as he enters pit lane for the very last time after what has been, by any measure, an absolutely stellar career in motorsport on two wheels and four. Look at the crowd waving ...

Re: Xj6 4.2 engine

If your problem is not incorrect level but just a rattling stick, put a felt or rubber seal under he stick collar (depending on stick type). That will prevent metal-to-metal leaks, and then fit a dipstick bracket to the rear exhaust manifold to stop it moving by putting it under tension. If it has n...

Re: Vacum retard - again

Hello Harald I was probably the person who made what you consider a nonsense comment. The vacuum retard is a system designed to make a very large engine warm up quicker and make fewer emissions. It does this by retarding the timing, which burns leftover fuel in the exhaust (less pollution out the ex...

Re: Selling items to someone in the EU

Compared to the EU selling and buying to and from the US now seems like childsplay. Not quite. On Nov 30th I shipped two boxes from the US to a Jag-lovers guy in Germany. Total cost $283. Next day on Dec 1st one package was bounced 'return to sender' at US customs near here, despite a completed cus...

Re: What is this car

I would love to see a build picture on an OD box going into a SWB. When I say it can't be done I mean not without major metal cutting in stressed areas. Things are so tight there and UJ access so tricky, that inserting a box that is a full seven inches longer to the prop flange, with the transmissio...

Re: Experimental Borrani wheels for Series 1

Serge, I have no experience of Borranis on Jags but a lot on motorbikes and some on bicycles a long time ago. The motorcycle market was mostly for road racing or as original on Moto Guzzi, Ducati etc. but because off-road riding is much harder on wheels that is where I used them most. Here are my th...

Re: Auto to Manual Conversion series 2 2+2

Just picking up what Steve correctly mentions above - the gearbox top cover will need to be changed - The thread is about converting an auto. Autos do not have to change top covers. Whenever I sold an MOD kit to an auto owner I pointed out they were lucky to have the potential of getting a ‘better’...

Google Jaguar engine numbers and look up your full number with prefix/suffix and the table will say what mosel the engine came from.

Re: Gearbox rear seal S1 2+2

In a similar scenario it is usually possible to slacken off the engine mounts and stabiliser and “persuade” the engine forward half an inch or more. I had to do it when fitting a Guy Broad 5-speed in an FHC for someone.

Not specifically related to this query, but for general info:

Because of the market size and the need to supply dealers with info, Jaguar North America developed lots of stuff never seen in the UK. If you're stuck - especially for a repatriated car - try contacting coventryfoundation.org
