Re: Christopher Storey

Angus alerted me today of Christopher’s passing. He lived pretty close to my sisters in Burton on the Wirral so I visited him when I came back to see family. Hilary, too, was the nicest of people and knew all about the houses my sisters had moved to as she was a keen horticulturalist and the gardens...

If the sampled items pass, then the remaining quantity is released for distribution. Much more time and cost efficient than inspecting each item when shipping. This issue is as old as the practice of supply chains and trading. SNGB are entitled to receive goods fit for resale and the original manuf...

Re: 3.8 inlet manifold gaskets leaking

hylomar is fuel proof, Room Temperature Vulcanizing silicone is not. Fuel might be puddling at the bottom of the ports and cause a leak when coolant gets up to pressure? Cometic are excellent but expensive, although they can be reused several times. Fibre gaskets are better than tin gaskets (which l...

Thanks for having me on this forum. Looking forward to collecting and exchanging technical information. The object: '66 2+2 left hand drive E type, purchased by my father in the UK in 1966. Welkom, bienvenue Meneer/Monsieur Loeners (hoe heet je alsjeblieft?). We are a friendly bunch here. My family...

Re: E type vrs XKE why ..?

So why did Jaguar put the E-Type badge on……It would have caused confusion amongst customers in its biggest market. ‘Why’ questions are always tricky, David, but I suspect Jaguar felt confident there’d be no problem for the same reason you’d still know it was Jill if she emerged from the jeweller’s ...

Re: E type vrs XKE why ..?

I used to follow the line of thought expressed here but it is incomplete at best. Jaguar used the term XKE in North American printed materials more or less from the start and years before the boot badge. The declared XK120,140,150 linkage which supposedly ignored the racing heritage is 180-degrees o...

No reserve Jags at auction…

I’m no expert on auctions, but the way I read it, that means you could potentially win one of 13 Jags (or whatever else you fancy) with a sane offer, as they must all sell? It’s a US event so the exchange rate isn’t great, but still… *Broad Arrow Group will be auctioning more than 120 spectacular ex...

Aussie dollars or US? Early 3.8 sets with correct linkage are more rare & pricey, I suppose.

Re: Valve spring retainer cap issues

Coming late to this but am impressed with Roger’s attitude and focus in the face of a fair amount of convoluted logic. As his painstaking assembly tests have shown - there is no quick DIY size check that can be applied to samples of this item. Tapers are tricky to measure, especially small internal ...

Premium price? I’ve had no nibbles all year at £2,100 for a complete set here.

Depends whose show. Over-plating and mirror polishing would be penalised by serious judges.

Re: Girling Power Stop 5204 in D-Type ?

I've had two replicas with no servo and am finishing off a third. Your friend has two on a single car? On such a light car with road tyres it's my view that you only want brakes that lock up under extreme pressure, not inadvertently. Scrap the servos and try various softer pad types and cylinder dia...

Re: woodruff keys

….. they look ok in profile but to wide to fit the groove . Are there different ones on other 4.2 engines ? All the same. They are meant to be a light interference fit and not drop-in. What width are they? Do they not tap into any of the slots? Maybe your crank is bruised. Depending on your accurat...

Re: Can you be charged import duty twice?

That makes sense Chris, thanks. I've only got invoices for the stuff I've farmed out, which is the rear bodywork. and I paid North Carolina purchase tax on that although I'm a Maryland resident. The rest is DIY and all US taxes were paid as normal on parts, engine machining, materials etc. same as U...

Re: Inspection Pit Covers

I dug a pit in the Buxton workshop I built into a raised bank. Wood is extremely stiff for its weight (on a par with steel depending on grades). It was a comparatively narrow pit to accommodate old narrow vehicles. The unsupported span was of course considerably shorter than the timber length, and y...

Re: Can you be charged import duty twice?

Thanks chaps. It’s not road-ready so not UK registered. My three motorbikes are still UK registered so the same owner British Returned Goods sounds likely and would make sense for the car whose paperwork hasn’t changed. I do see the logic of charging a higher levy for a now more valuable item, and t...

Can you be charged import duty twice?

In 1993 SNGB imported a 1966 2+2 project from America, which they subsequently sold to someone in Stockport from whom I bought it in 2003. I have the original stamped & signed ‘V something’ form, confirming duty was paid, plus receipts for both sales and original title etc. In 2018 I had it shipped ...

We could install...
