Damaged Captured nut cage repair

Talk about stubborn. Damaged Captured nut cage for the lower outside passenger door hinge bolt, with a half stripped( realy tight ) nut. Would not tighten or come out. Another gift of the Monkeys who previously "restored" this car….. Figured it was a bit of a safety issue. So how the hell do I fix t...

New engine mounts

After reading a post on engine mounts, I checked mine and sure enough , they were sagged enough to allow the carb linkage to hit the frame. Since it was mentioned that this could cause the throttle to stick wide open It was a safety issue so time for new ones. I chose to left the engine with a crane...

Stripped gearbox support captive nut

Ahhhh...and hits just keep on comin! As you can see from the picture ,one of the four bolts that hold the rear engine/gearbox mount has a stripped captive nut. Just noticed it loose....tightened it and it never made it to even snug before that sinking feeling of a spinning bolt ( the bolt is fine ) ...

Engine mount spacers

A question for the collective. Are engine mount spacer always required under series one front engine mounts? I am replacing my mounts and there are none there now but I see them in the parts list. The lump seems a little low right now and is hitting the adjustable reaction plate bolts. Rear mount sp...

Re: Vibration on frame

Found "THEM" Noise #1 : exhaust down pipes hitting each other , reverberating through whole exhaust system ( two header bolts are stripped allowing them to move into contact under load ) Noise # 2 : Left rear tire rubbing on bump stop under acceleration load making zzzz..zzz..zzz noise at the same t...

Inside your Brake fluid sensor

Got a new one today so I thought I would have a look inside the old one and see why it wasn't working. What appear to be rivets on top are spiral screws. They may be able to be carefully pried off, I ground them off thinking they were rivets. Once the top is off the rubber gasket and metal cap can b...

Re: Vibration on frame

So found two interesting things. A weight has fallen off the drive shaft. Found it while reaching blindly at the back of the shaft and the speedo take off has been hitting the tunnel. Tried to shift the lump 1/8" after loosening all the mounts-no dice. Was able to wedge a bit of old inner tube rubbe...

Re: Vibration on frame

Test drive over
better but far from gone. I will remove center console , gear box cover and test/ listen and see what Ican find.
Its the rear mount spring or spacer, the speedo take off or the drive shaft universals i would guess.

Re: Vibration on frame

Thanks Steve and All ! Pin and washer removed. Only took half an hour a stiff neck and some skinned knuckles. A bargain by this Jags usual fee. Test drive next. Rubber spacer and seats were in good condition two yrs ago on engine placement but I now have new synthetic ones for a winter project. I wi...

Vibration on frame

Hello all, It seems I get one difficult problem solved and another overlaps it. Still waiting to properly drive this car after three years ! The latest mystery issue is moderate grinding/vibrating ( something is knocking against the underside near the gearbox ) . This happens in the lower gears on t...

Re: Mystery mixture

Yes Tom, If the needles are set correctly in the pistons , the one on the left would result in a very lean setting as mentioned earlier in my post. I also have some old UH needles the car came with and they are identical at the level you see in the above photo and get thinner ( richer ) farther towa...

Re: Mystery mixture

So as a test I switched jet needles between carbs. The problem followed the center jet needle to the rear carb where I placed it . Here is why https://i.postimg.cc/3rvK61Bd/IMG-5025.jpg The problem jet needle is on the left. Both needles clearly marked UM. The rebuild kits were ordered from an extre...

Re: Mystery mixture

Yup all carbs checked with gauge at idle. All idle screw washers checked .What I did find today was an oddly taller fuel bowl float and a sticky new needle valve in the middle carb ( after removing the carb of course ). These things may have lead to fuel starvation/lean mixture despite the lower/ric...

Re: Mystery mixture

Hi Tom. Yes choke has been set and double checked as per shop manual and visual for main jet operation and fast idle clearance set to .002" on the screws . I have gone over everything twice prior to posting not wishing to waste members time ( not to mention trolling the archives for a few hours ! ) ...

Re: Mystery mixture

Hi Steve All pistons clunk and are free moving, no marks on needle just check ( again ) OK. Tom, Just verified firing order traced to each cylinder per manual from dist cap now, all OK. Barr, I was thinking fuel starvation too ( a bee? really ? wow ! ), as in possibly an obstruction in the fuel to m...
