Re: MOT no more?

I understand what you're saying but don't agree that the problem would be confined to the, shall we say, "lesser" marques. There are careless and unscrupulous people involved in all aspects of the classic car industry, which is what it has become. Frankly, some of the things I've read on this forum ...

Can anyone see the third image? The one after the girl photos and before the engine support. It has a small icon with the word 'image's after it. I.e. this one: https://s10.postimg.org/hn1glna09/Engine_stand_fingers.jpg I see exactly what you describe. I get a problem with Postimage in that sometim...

Re: S1: Otter switch temp ratings?

Yes, Julian. You're right about the aftermarket switches. They are dreadful. As a slight correction, without hysteresis the switch would only operate once. It would never switch back off. You can get away with a wider hysteresis because the engine thermostat works in tandem with the fan thermostat, ...

Re: S1: Otter switch temp ratings?

Hi I have a long history in bimetallic switch design and used to work for the guy who designed the original E Type Otter switch. Even back then, they thought it was hilarious to use a wiper motor to drive the cooling fan. While I don't know, or more to the point, can't remember the specifics of the ...

That's good news Jerōme but remember that fuses blow for a reason so don't be surprised if it happens again.

Re: Camshaft lifetime

To answer the original question. Check the camshaft by measuring the overall lift to ensure it is within the tolerances in the manual. Also check for scuffing of the contact faces. A little marking up is to be expected but if the nitriding is worn through then it's scrap. The camshafts can last inde...

Re: XJS Crown wheel and pinion in my e type housing

Hi Dave

When you say replace the whole differential, do you mean the complete final drive unit, the differential being housed within the unit?

I know it may seem a little pedantic but, to avoid confusion, clarity is essential in these types of discussions.

Yes, it should have an LSD but who knows what has happened to the car over the years?

To be sure you need to do what you said and raise it up.

Re: Brake bleeding problems - silicone fluid

A minor point but dot 5.1 is not silicone based. It is still glycol based and is equally good at stripping paint. I know...I use it in my mg. Silicone fluid is dot 5. No point one. Yep. Well aware of this. I see no point in using silicone based brake fluid, especially since it's easy to avoid spill...

Re: Brake bleeding problems - silicone fluid

I thought the problem with silicone brake fluid was it's lack of lubrication properties rather than it actually degrading the seal materials.

I've used DOT 5.1 in my cars. It's fine.

But surely you're going to have to take it all apart again to install your engine and gearbox, so why bother getting into the detail of castor and camber settings at this stage?

191 LUA is a Leeds issue from June 1964. That could possibly assist with XKEDATA searches??
Didn't the registration system change in 1963 with the introduction of the 7 character suffix letter arrangement?

Re: Just wondering

By far the easiest and most universally suitable way is simply to say left hand side or right hand side. The rule being that its left or right when sitting in the vehicle facing forward (behind the steering wheel). Do export model wheel spinners say near side and off side as well as left and right? ...
