Geoff:
You are correct…I meant to say Monday, February 12th is Penelope’s 60th birthday.
Thanks for catching that.

Yes…I also use an Optima Red Top in my 3.8 E-type. Interestingly, my last Red Top failed to hold a charge just two months before the (5 year?) warranty expired. Autozone replaced it on the spot without question. I spray paint them black so they don’t look so jarringly colorful under the bonnet. Alan...

For what it’s worth: I’ve been running my 3.8 liter, 9:1 E-type on unleaded 10% ethanol exclusively for the past 10 or 20 years here in the U.S. with zero ill effects. Nothing has melted, the valves haven’t destroyed their seats and the car starts, idles and runs perfectly. Find something else to wo...

Furbz:
I see lots of red flags on that car. That’s not to say the car shouldn’t be rescued and restored but you’re looking at about $200,000 in restoration costs (here in the States) if you want that car restored properly.
Good luck!

Re: Question regarding camshaft removal
One follow-up question, if you please: when I re-install the camshafts should I slather some re-assembly lube into the cam bearings, or is motor oil sufficient?
Thanks again!

Christopher, Steve:
Okay, I did as you both suggested and loosened the chain with the special tool and *presto!* the camshafts slid right out. Hopefully they will go back in as easily as they came out!
Thanks for your help!

Question regarding camshaft removal
I need to remove the camshafts on my 1964 OTS 3.8 liter to adjust the valve clearances (this will be my first time doing this). My question is as follows: Is it necessary to go through the additional step of slackening the timing chain tension (using special tool JD2B) before removing the camshafts?...

Baaz:
It goes without saying but I’ll say it anyway: once you remove the fanbelt do not run the engine for more than a minute or two. The engine will quickly overheat without the waterpump spinning.
Good luck,
Alan

OBL prices are insane
Gooding & Co are offering two OBL E-types, one coupe, one roadster, at their August Pebble Beach auction. Now I understand that it’s Pebble Beach, where prices are always higher than the market in general. I also understand that auction estimates are often wishful thinking on the part of the auction...

I usually assign a 30% discount to a non-matching numbers car. Others will discount them more or less.

Beautiful car! You’re a very lucky guy to acquire such a rare and important car. If you decide to replace those Series 2 toggles with proper Series 1 toggles I have a set of originals off a ‘64 OTS…they need a rechrome but they’re yours for $100 plus shipping from the USA. Good luck! Alan N.J. https...

I recently had my set of original circa-1964 A-B spinners restored here in New Jersey for U.S. $80 each (not very helpful for those of you in Old Blighty, I know, but this may prove useful to the Yanks on this forum): The name and address of the shop is: MARA POLISHING & PLATING 105 W. Paul,
Others will argue with me but I would give a non-matching numbers car a 20% haircut, all other things being equal. Just one man’s opinion.

Allrand: Please post a photo of the Triplex decal...there were several varieties. Like many here, I always thought Triplex decals were only used on S3 cars, but a video on YouTube proved me wrong. Chris:
The little spring clip is the last thing you install on the long threaded rod after you’ve reassembled the filter assembly. It is there simply to hold everything in place as you maneuver the canister down to the filter-head.
