Re: Worst plugs ever seen?
Or would you say water getting through bonnet vents and settling in spark plug cavities? The car has no rain covers installed on top of the engine. Nevertheless, would coolant produce this reddish residue? ATM certainly it is green antifreeze not orange. This was my first impression of the situatio...

Ignition failure on S3
I was out for a Fall foliage tour several weeks ago and noticed my tachometer was doing 1000 rpm swings. When I got my jag home and parked it, it wouldn’t restart. After leaving it to cool down it restarted. Drove her one more time this past week, waited for the snow to leave and she did it again. C...

Re: SNG Barratt V12 Ignition system
I have the SNG system since 2017. I had a failure in 2020 and they replaced the system, it was destroying the rotor. Meltdown and contaminated the cap. Certainly worth checking due to the heat issue. I am now running a Lucas rotor and had no issues so far. I always carry and extra cap and rotor. I h...

Re: Rear spring and u-joint clearance
Jacked the car back up with jack stands under the wishbones. Lifted the body to release the weight on the shocks and the left front shock is broken at the mount. Can the shocks be removed without dropping the IRS. I cannot see the rear shock nut. If I remove the wheels, is everything accessible? Sta...

Re: Rear spring and u-joint clearance
As always thanks for your insight. Going to remove and replace all shocks today. I will check the circled part. I think it is the end of the spring. My assumption and hope is the top bushing has failed allowing the shock to move. Everything else appears to have no slack movement, u-joints, wishbone ...

Re: Fuel gauge not registering properly
My sender failed this past Fall. I ordered a new one from SNG and it read over full, and at 60 miles it went to full. I ran out of gas with 3/8 indicating. I bent the arm for the float several times until I was able to get the indicator to read correctly. Okay, 5 damn times! I reset the trip odomete...

Re: Rear spring and u-joint clearance
Thank you for the confirmation. I didn’t look on right side, but left side upper shocks are installed with the nut on the outside. I will replace all 4 shocks this week.

Rear spring and u-joint clearance
Out for a drive and at 45 miles per hour, I developed a intermittent scraping noise. Nursed it home, jacked up the rear and placed it on jack stands on the body. No noise. Moved the jack stands to the outside hubs to place weight back on the springs and approximate ride height. Again no noise. Crawl...

Re: Fuel vapour Lock
I have fought my S3 for the hot part of the summer. It was a hot soak restart issue, only after sitting for 20 minutes. I played with fuel pressure to attempt to overcome the fuel vaporizing to no luck. I was running 5 pounds of fuel pressure at the pump in an effort to pump more fuel through the no...

Re: Which Ignition
I fitted the SNG replacement unit. The only change I would make is to go to a vacuum advance, mine is retard USA spec, and have carb drilled for that vacuum source. Otherwise their system has been great. I thought I was having issues with the module/igniter but I was having a vapor lock issue in hot...

Re: V-12 ignition system upgrade
My old distributor had been modified and the led wheel had been riveted back on. I went with the SNG system and after solving an issue with rotors getting too warm, I am happy with the distributor. In retrospect, I would have ordered the Non-North American distributor to get vacuum advance instead o...

Re: Bonehead move
Thanks for attempting to justify my bonehead move. Probably why I suspected ignition issues first. While I was diagnosing the fuel issue, I eliminated the under hood metal fuel filter that had been installed by the previous owner. Kinda silly to have two. Was the perfect time to remove it as I check...

Bonehead move
Last Fall I had noticed the cold enrichment system on my strombergs was not working. PITA to start cold and in MT, it is cool in the Fall. I had completely overhauled the carbs in 2017, replacing everything. This time I was looking to clean the enrichment discs and reset the floats to eliminate addi...

Re: Carburetor rebuild
I was hoping you would chime in. The carb synchronizer is especially tough to use on the drivers side since removing the air box to recheck it after a couple of months of use is a PITA. I was looking for a better solution. I will be checking the vacuum per your instructions. As always thanks for you...

Carburetor rebuild
I rebuilt the Strombergs 4 years ago and in the recent month, she has been difficult to start and keep running until I get 3-4 minutes of driving time. After four days of troubleshooting, only happens with cold engine, I finally discovered that the choke system was inoperative. Carbs are partially d...

Re: Ignition rotor failure again.
So after several discussions with staff at SNG Barratt, the technicians surmised that the system might be creating an out of phase response and damaging the rotor via too much voltage. The folks there replaced all parts to the ignition system; distributor, ballistic resistor, amplifier and coil. Whi...

Ignition rotor failure again.
I posted just over a year ago after my jag became a no start and I had to have her towed home. This year, just prior to Memorial Day weekend, I had driven about 10 miles when I developed a misfire. I immediately headed home since I was certain I had another cap and rotor issue. I removed the cap ove...

Re: Cap and rotor failure
Yes the cap was ok, just coated with dried on foreign matter, presumably from the rotor. I sprayed it with ether to attempt to clean it....I had no electrical cleaning spray. I cleaned it with a one inch scrapper, which took three to four soakings. I made the assumption that the under hood, sorry bo...

Cap and rotor failure
I purchased the opus upgraded distributor from SNG Barrett in October 2016 for my 1974 E-type. Last fall, I was prepping for a car gathering. I was sprayed off the wire wheels with a pressure washer and then finished hand washing the car. When I restarted, it was misfiring. I missed the show and let...
