Recent oddish trip with Lady Devorguilla
Lady Devorguilla is a 1963 Series One FHC (3.8). She likes chasing F Types around country roads of a Sunday. That's how one F Type owner asked yours truly (Lady Devorguilla's human) to do him a solid. Actually a friend of his. Chap's father is turning 80. Name is Dave. Dave had a red E Type (Lady D ...

Re: Series 1 oil pressure higher than usual
That black deposit is very likely just to be carbon washed from the exhaust system when the engine is cold . Having just looked up Sandton and seen that it is 1600 metres = 5250 feet above sea level, I do wonder whether you are over rich , and that is leading to excess oil consumption . I think at ...

oil spray pattern and spotting
The pics are of the spray pattern accumulating on the garage floor (over several months), and spotting under the car (also accumulated over months). The missus is thrilled. No smoke while driving. Drove her 120 miles today and left the oil alone, despite showing 1/3rd into gnarled bit cold on dipsti...

Re: Series 1 oil pressure higher than usual
Ok, thanks for the warning - I know gauges can be misleading, but did not think a dipstick can be far off from right.
I'll wait until it gets to on or below the start of the gnarled bit.

Re: Series 1 oil pressure higher than usual
What is your oil consumption? "too much" for any XK engine is anything worse than perhaps 150 miles per pint , 200 being entirely typical although some people do report figures significantly better than this . The usage is also definitely performance related i.e. the harder you drive it, the more i...

Series 1 oil pressure higher than usual
Dear friends and boffins! I have been absent from this forum for so many moons.I suppose that's an indication of the absence of frustrations and no need for solutions! My Lady Devorguilla '63 Series 1 3.8 is running so nicely. I am heading towards 20,000 miles since I took delivery in October 2017. ...

Re: SNGB feeler gauge set
Thanks Mich, so the numbers are ‘thous’ then - 4, 6 and 8 thou? Then my gap is a bit wide.... But the choke works well now!

SNGB feeler gauge set
I searched in vain for answers, both on the web and here, so apologies if I missed the info in some post. The standard toolkit, which SNGB replicates, comes with a feeler gauge set with 3 blades, stamped 4, 6 and 8. They are quite thin, but I seem unable to measure them properly with what looked lik...

Re: Big epoxy like flakes in header tank
Thanks guys.
Bite the bullet.
And she's been driving so extremely nicely.
I'll report back at some point.
I'm at 12 666 miles since I took delivery in October 2017. Covid has slowed the run rate considerably. And now she's going to sit around waiting for a header tank.

Thanks Andrew. Yes, common sense suggests bite the bullet.
That also means replacing the tank....

Big epoxy like flakes in header tank
Dear all I've had very good driving in my 1963 3.8 FHC since last I checked in, with the rear suspension undergoing a (dear) full overhaul, which sorted out the weird creaking I had on throttle. Now, some advice required. PM or post here. I felt something bobbing about inside my radiator header tank...

The suspension joint theory is also promising, especially given the creaky metal spring sound on slow turn.

Re: How to post a short video of a rattle?
Yes I think mountings need attention, as it rings a bell that mounting was sagging a bit on one side.
That may well be it.
Let’s see! Any further ideas welcome and appreciated. Won’t be able to have her attended to until the New Year.
Will report back.

Re: How to post a short video of a rattle?
Hi Steve There are two phenomena. I think they are related. But they are different. The first is a metal creak, like a metal bedspring creaking, occurring every now and then on a slow turn or on slow pullaway. To the uninitiated (me) that sounds like body, not engine. The second is this weird rattle...

Re: How to post a short video of a rattle?
Ok, here goes: (Many thanks Richard for the You Tube advice): [Apparently, the video could be viewed only by me - I have tried to make it public in the post below] Just after I say "dry rattle", if you have sound turned up full, or nice earphones, you can hear the dry rattle quite well for a bit. Li...

How to post a short video of a rattle?
In August, I posted the following in the "Running Reports" forum: "Another recent phenomenon that is starting to manifest more frequently, if still intermittently: there is what can only be described as a sound as if of a metal spring creaking, manifesting itself with the throttle at times, mainly n...

Re: Gearbox Numbers
Keith : I think you are correct and that EJ is in this case a misprint . EJ boxes were the early all synchro boxes fitted to a few late 3.8 cars and to the 1964-6 4.2 cars, and were closer ratio than the later KJ/KJS?KE boxes One learns something new all the time. I thought the all synchro gearbox ...

Re: Fuel filter (Glass Bowl)
Thanks so much Steve for starting this thread, and Julian for giving me the SNGB input. This is all very interesting. It makes sense to me that, especially for one in my situation, constantly wondering how clean the fuel system is and whether (or when) it will block up again, the design entailing th...

fuel filter
Thanks guys, also for the interesting (if somewhat bewildering) link to the thread on filters. When I first had a blockage issue, I noticed the different filters. The Service Manual at C.14 has the gauze filter assembly (first image below), which seems identical to the current set-up but for a frisb...
