Re: XKE Data

Hi Steve/ Peter, Many thanks for your replies. The car is 1E35641. So yes I am for now owner of two E types. I am not sure when I will ever finish the S2 but the S1.5 car I will wax it up and get on the road for the summer and (hopefully) just enjoy driving it. Maybe it will inspire me to finish the...

Re: XKE Data

Dear All, Sorry to dredge up an old topic, however I feel I should raise a concern I have over the XKE Data website by relating a recent experience. I recently bought an E type that had been advertised on ebay. Before purchase I checked the XKE Data website and at that time there was no record for t...

Re: VIN number

Hi, sorry to open an old topic. I am one of those whose picture frame has no number at all (it is in grey primer and looks like it has been changed at some time - the bonnet shows signs of having front end damage so must have been in a shunt). I have the Heritage Cert and all the other numbers are p...

Re: Cost of respray

Yes agreed a top notch job cannot be cheap.

However paying top dollar does not guarantee a top notch job. I learned this from IDL UK.

Re: S2 FHC in the Paintshop

Hi Stuart, yes I think you are right. How can you trust/ work with a garage that won't admit their failings and just try to pass the cost of putting right their mistakes on the customer. Any decent garage/ paintshop would have taken it on the chin and done the right thing. With what I have been char...

Re: Cost of respray

Yes go for it and cover the car yourself. You will save a packet and have the satisfaction of knowing you did it yourself. As you say the worst that can happen is you have to rub it down to primer again.

My car is currently in primer. I am rapidly coming around to this way of thinking.

Re: S2 FHC in the Paintshop

The bonnet is back from IDL but now has fresh damage (photo). Bonnet will need extra fitting and panel work estimated at GBP500 and more filling work estimated at GBP1500!

Re: Cost of respray

Hi Christopher, No don't hesitate to say it. I am being ripped off. I am paying MechSpray by the hour and so far it is 300+ hours plus materials for prep work on the bodywork. And this does not cover the work on my bonnet - another 4K+ spent at IDL in Hastings which went pear shaped (see my thread -...

Re: Cost of respray

My S2 is currently in the paintshop (see my thread - S2 FHC in the paintshop). Cost of prep (filling/ blocking) work so far is 14K and not a drop of paint in sight. The paintshop wants 6K to put 'cover' on it. Currently work is stalled over who responsible for cost of wasted work on bonnet. So that ...

Re: S2 FHC in the Paintshop

Thanks Steve. I would appreciate that as unfortunately at the moment it is looking like it will end up getting messy. I will give some feedback on how things go. Hopefully IDL will do the right thing and deliver a bonnet to the standard that one would expect from a company that specialises in manufa...

Re: S2 FHC in the Paintshop

Just an update on the bonnet problem. Looking like the paint applied by IDL-UK was not specified by the paint manufacturer for automotive applications. They might have got away with it except that it was not properly activated. Maybe incorrect mixing or possibly just old activator product that had b...

Re: Nova Certificate.

Hi Herbie, I am in exactly the same boat as you. My 1968 S2 was imported into the UK from the US two years ago and has a NOVA number. However as yet it is unregistered as it does not have an MOT and is still undergoing a slow resto (currently in the paintshop). I am considering making a big push on ...

Re: Heater Flapper Stay and Air Intake Bonnet

Hi Jim, here is a good photo showing the heater duct (SNG #10) mentioned by Mark. Photo is of an early S2 bonnet (1R25275). Not sure whether it was changed for later S2 cars to clear new position of the a/c compressor. Regards, Kris

Re: S2 FHC in the Paintshop

Hi Steve, apparently it is a polyester spray filler and it is meant to be thick like that. Most of it comes off again. I would guess it takes out the big undulations but I am no expert. The rest of the car had the same treatment. You can see in the first pics on this thread the main body tub in the ...

Should point out that the white covering that lifted is a polyester filler and not a primer.

Re: S2 FHC in the Paintshop

Disaster with the bonnet! Following the return of the bonnet from IDL in Hastings where it had been in for a complete rebuild, MechSpray have been working hard putting in more than 40 hrs on fitting/ filling and shaping it. A short while after application of the filler primer it all started to lift....

Re: S2 FHC in the Paintshop

Geoff, the mirrors from Fosseway look perfect and may well be worth a try. It is not clear whether they clip on to the door frame or it necessary to drill holes in the frames. This is still way better (in my opionion) than making holes in the wings. Since there is really no way back from that later ...
