Re: Poor starting from cold

Steve, This is so confusing as my pertronix instructions for a D177600 distributor states compatable coils are3.0 ohm and adds note: Remove or bypass external ballast resistor or resistance wire when installing the recommended flamethrower or HV E-Core coil. I do note the instructions you show are f...

Re: Poor starting from cold

gtjoey, Hi just an update on this post, I have now fitted petronix 3ohm coil and removed the ballast resistor and she starts like a dream, full choke one small blip on starter and she fired straight up, brilliant. Instructions for pertronix state remove ballast resistor on this system, but previous ...

Thanks Steve,
Yes that was my first port of call but all is working fine with regards to choke and cables.

Re: Poor starting from cold

Christopher, Yes , interesting thought, I actually used to do that ( well warmed plugs on an hotplate ) on an old ford van we had on the farm because it had low compression and was a pig to start in the cold. On my present problem I have been reading up about the pertronix distributor and they recom...

Re: Poor starting from cold

Christopher, Thanks for reply, I did wonder if the coil is correct, it is the one supplied with car from US so could be suspect, also could replace resistor to try that. Battery is fairly new and for e type so think that is not an issue. If you crank in short bursts the same as I am doing it sounds ...

Poor starting from cold

Hi all, I am experiencing difficult cold starting at the moment and would consider all advice, my car 1970 4.2 ots triple carbs, petronix ignition , high torque starter, ballast resistor. From cold with full choke it will catch if I do short bursts on the starter, it seems to get higher current as I...

Re: Servo not working

Steve, Yes have taken out small plate and filed it round at the bottom so that it will slide better and it seems to work. What I am querying is should the first piston spring go up to the plate or be held back in the bore as my spring is at the moment, to me it makes more sense for it to be forward ...

Re: Servo not working

Just an update on original problem of servo not working. Now after dismantling master cylinder I can see the small plate at the end of main piston that should push the small piston to activate reaction valve is not seating correctly and the recess it should fit in is not there consequently it just j...

Re: Servo not working

In response to Joe, I am only renewing seals on my master cylinder as it was a new item about 3 years ago and I do not feel inclined to spend another £260 quid when all I wanted to do was open it up to check the lever operating the intermediate piston is not stuck or indeed the piston itself, all se...

Re: Servo not working

Steve, Pretty certain servo is not working correctly as at idle with engine running I have vacuum to both sides of servo, on depressing brake pedal this remains the same , no change to atmosphere at rear of servo to allow piston to move forward. Have now dismantled master cylinder and will refit wit...

Servo not working

Hello All, I have a problem with my series 2 servo not working, have replaced master cylinder, servo, reaction valve , and vacuum non return valve and have quadruple checked all hoses are correctly connected and not kinked, also removed piston from end of master cylinder that operates reaction valve...

Re: Dipstick reading

MCJAG Steve. Thank you that is exactly the case.
I know that by heating a dipstick it will not magically alter its length, it was the ability to read the level that I wanted to enhance.

Re: Dipstick reading

Just to clarify all this, I did oil change with correct amount of oil and all was ok then over a period of say 4 months the oil reading on the dipstick seemed to drop so I filled up with a litre but the reading on stick was not very clear. I tried cleaning dipstick with various solvents to clean and...

Dipstick reading

Over last year I had the impression my E was using oil by the readings I was getting off the dipstick. I had made sure readings are on level ground every time and cleaned stick thoroughly with wire wool and WD40 but still readings were below line. I found this worrying because I had done full oil ch...

Re: HI Torque starter

Dave , Thanks for your comments, I have recrimped the spade connection on starter and thought this might have solved it but it happened again. I have just changed earth wire to engine as this was slightly frayed and very oily( haha), just doing this was 2 hour. job as had to remove exhaust front pip...

Yes, I bought from reputable supplier, have to check my invoices for exactly who and all connections are tight and once it does start all seems fine again. I will remove and check anyway.

HI Torque starter

I fitted a high torque starter to my series 2 4.2 about 18 months ago because the lucus unit failed. All has been fine up until the last month when I have experienced 2 failures to turn over and fire up, I can hear the relay and possibly the solenoid clicking but it does not spin, even after numerous...

Re: engine using oil

Good point Malcolm about checking levels in the same place. I have just checked oil after parking in garage and it is well up so have probably only used half of what I have put back in. I originally checked on driveway and I notice it has quite a slope. Think panic is over for now, I should have not...

engine using oil

Hi everyone, I have just returned from a 500 mile trip in the E and on checking oil it needed a litre and half of oil to top up to previous levels. I have recently fitted triple SUs and know they were running a bit rich ( corrected now ) but this seems a lot of oil to use. Getting about 17 mpg runni...
