Re: Door Arm Rest question

My early S2 roadster which is almost totally original has no arm rests. Apparently the early ones weren't fitted with them by design, but a change of mind as a result of there being nothing to hang on to when pulling the door shut meant they were reintroduced fairly quickly.

Re: Chrome wing beading

Thanks Christopher. I've tried to look at contemporary photographs but none of them are clear enough to be definitive.

Chrome wing beading

Does anyone know whether the chrome headlight surrounds sit on top of the bonnet beading, or is the beading cut off short so the surround can fit the bonnet contour? Mine is an S1 4.2 Coupe 1966.

Re: Importation and the DVLA

I'm sorry Hugo but you're wrong on a number of counts. Firstly the reason for asking the name of the driver is to avoid prosecuting the wrong person, i.e. To protect the innocent. Secondly your wife almost certainly would know who was driving. What bloke would put his beloved in the position of comm...

Re: Heater fan motor very noisy

Hi Francis,

I had the same problem with my S2. Lubricant temporarily cures the problem, but pretty soon it returns. Best to replace fan for an updated more efficient one and replace the bearing, otherwise it will drive you mad!

Re: New to the forum and looking (dreaming) of an E-Type

Having restored a number of cars over the years from Minis to Maserati's, and after each having vowed never to do it again, there is only one piece of advice I can give you. It will cost twice as much and take twice as long as your most pessimistic estimate!

Re: Importation and the DVLA

It's true though that a wife cannot generally be made to give evidence against her husband, but she can do voluntarily, so you'll need to keep her sweet! Chris Huhne MP didn't and both he and his wife Vicky Pryce went to prison for fibbing about who was driving.......

Re: Importation and the DVLA

Frankly if I were an underpaid employee of the DVLA dealing with what appears to be someone (who appears to live abroad) being sarcastic about a system which actually isn't complicated at all (I've done it several times) I probably wouldn't go out of my way to be particularly helpful. Moreover I wou...

Re: Importation and the DVLA

My experience of the DVLA, and I've dealt with them often in my professional capacity, is that they are polite and helpful. They are obliged by law to check vehicles coming into the UK to be registered for obvious reasons and I'm sure there would be immediate criticism if they didn't do so, particul...

Re: S1 vs S2/3

Hi Hugo, I think the reason is that the cars are now being bought as investments and not to drive. A number of dealers I know have customers they are advising on such cars, and they all hype the early stuff regardless of drivability. The said customers with more money than sense fall for it and pay ...

Re: S1 vs S2/3

I've only just seen this thread, being newish here. I have an S1 1966 FHC 4.2 and an S2 1969 OTS both original RHD. The latter car was John Coombs' personal E Type that he sold me just before he died. He owned it for 31 years. Both he, and Mike MacDowel, who also drove it, told me that he was very f...

S1 Coupe sunvisors

Hi,

Does anyone know where I can get the chrome plastic early sunvisor trim for my S1 Coupe which formed the edging to the square sunvisors? I've tried the usual suspects with no result.

Many thanks.

Interesting that on engine no. 7E 3352-9 that the gold colour does not extend up to the base of the rocker covers. I was told in an earlier thread this year that that is not original.

Re: rev counter and horn not working.

Almost certainly the fuse as same happened to me. First I knew was the fan ceasing to work and the engine overheating as that was on the same circuit on my S2. The fuse needed uprating.

Re: Luggage strips in S1 4.2 Coupe

From comparing the various photos on XKE Data (thank you David fror pointing me in that direction) it does seem that there was a change from pointy to square between May and July 1966. Problem solved I think. Thanks to you both.

Re: Luggage strips in S1 4.2 Coupe

Thanks Andrew and David. I'll do a bit more research before chiding the trimmers. It is a December 1966 car.
