Re: Idle speed suddenly too high

Problem solved. I found that there was a crack in the copper advance/retard pipe which would have been causing a slight air leak at the front carb. But I think the main issue was that the centre carb fast idle stop was maladjusted causing the throttle plate to be held slightly open with the choke fu...

Re: Vacuum advance pipe

I sourced my replacement from Martin Robey who, suffice to say, were considerably cheaper than the other major suppliers.

Re: Vacuum advance pipe

Hi Jack
I decided to bite the bullet and order a replacement tube assembly from MR. I was amazed at the difference in price between the leading suppliers.

Thanks for your input.

Vacuum advance pipe

Having discovered that there was a crack in this copper tube where it joins the soldered nipple at the carburettor end, I've managed to drop the nipple which I was about to resolder to the tube. An extensive search has failed to locate this nipple, so Ideally I'm looking for a replacement. So, does ...

Re: door handle rubber?? seal??

Hi Mike I think I remember seeing some advertised on eBay once, but I don't think that there were any fitted in the factory? If you have an old inner tube kicking around, they would be fairly straightforward to fabricate yourself. As for stopping water getting inside the door, that will be impossibl...

Re: E10 in my fuel tank!

My car suffers with poor cold starting as well. Left for a week or so it's fine. But left for 2 weeks or more it's not good at all. The engine just stumbles but won't properly catch. It does this quite a number of times before it starts properly. The best explanation I've read was from Andrew down u...

Re: Idle speed suddenly too high

It's been too cold to fanny around in my garage checking to see if one of the throttle plates is slightly open at idle. As I mentioned, I was wondering if I've disturbed something to cause this sudden change in idle speed. But I did start the car yesterday and ran it up to full temp, and lo and beho...

Re: Idle speed suddenly too high

I now don't leave the car for longer than a week without running it, but I suspect that if I did, it would still be difficult to start because I've not been able to find anything obviously wrong. Having thought about this new issue for a while, and your suggestions of an air leak, I think my next po...

Idle speed suddenly too high

Having not used the car for a week or so, I took it for a run today. Once the choke was fully in, I found that the idle is suddenly 400 rpm higher than it was previously. This was apparent both with the engine luke warm, and hot. I've had a good look at the choke mechanism and it all appears to be a...

Re: Replacement rocker switches

Hi Chris Not sure if these pics may be of use? My car is FHC built late in '69, so you won't have the HRW switch which is on the far RHS of the top pic. Going from R to L from the HRW switch is fan, washer, wiper. The bottom pic shows the hazard switch on the LH end. I only mention this because I do...

Re: Leaking coil

Thanks everyone. The only time I touch the throttle during starting is when I feel that the engine is definitely going to start. The carbs were professionally overhauled by Southern Carburettors who really know what they are doing, and I'm definitely getting full choke on all 3. I'll try some of you...

Re: Leaking coil

Hi Andrew I've read a lot about poor starting if these engines have been left for a while. Length of the intake tract, not getting full choke etc, but I love your hydrocarbon explanation. And it really makes sense. If left for a while, I crank my engine for around 5 seconds, and then one cylinder co...

Re: Leaking coil

Hi Steve & Steve I've read a lot about starting these engines after they've been left for a while and I always wait until the pump stops, and I always use full choke. Having said that I came back from Goodwood on Sunday and started the car again yesterday and it fired and ran immediately with no cho...

Leaking coil

If my car is not started for a longer period of time [maybe 10 days or more] it is very disinclined to burst into life. The car starts immediately if it has not been left. As one last throw of the dice, I replaced the virtually brand new Lucas Gold coil with a Bosch Blue. It made no difference whats...

Re: Gearbox and lsd oil recommendation

My freshly overhauled completely leak free gearbox was a bit tight engaging 1st and 2nd gear, & to try to overcome this I drained it and refilled it with Redline MT90. It then leaked like a sieve and I had to drain it and refill it with standard EP oil.

Re: Speedometer issue

Thanks everyone for your input. Very helpful. May car was built very late in '69 registered in early '70. My speedo face has the numbers SN-6332/08 1120 with a small sticker on the back showing 089. I've attached a photo of my reset knob. The knob has very little in and out movement particularly whe...

Speedometer issue

I sent my speedo for repair. It was returned to me but still did not work. I returned it and It came back to me with the needle working OK, but not so the odometer & milometer. I have tried it with the reset cable connected and disconnected. The main reason for this post is to ask about the reset ca...

Re: Should I have to pay to return an item?

Thanks David The overhauler mentioned that they have occasionally found that a tiny piece of swarf stuck to the magnet will prevent the needle from moving. If I find that the needle moves correctly by turning the mechanism with a screwdriver or drill over the next few days, I will probably put the i...
