Re: Rattling noise from lower cam chain
Will do so on Monday, when at my Stockholm garage. I read through the invoices from CMC, and see thar both chains, and tensioner were renewed, and the top chain was tightened last year. I see nothing about a new water pump. I will remove the belt on Monday, and if no noise, it is the water pump. How...

Re: Rattling noise from lower cam chain
Agreed, but the noise does emanate at the front of the engine, and low down

Rattling noise from lower cam chain
Kicks in at 1800, and more so on a hot than cold engine. Has been present for a couple of years during which I have done perhaps 1000 miles. Sounds like metal balls being shaken around in a tin can. Using a stetoscope, I can´t hear anything from the water pump, as I hoped, as it is easier to change....

Gulf 20-50 vs other 20-50 mineral oils
I have used the same oil for 20 yrs and been very pleased (Swedish private brand but made by the same refinery as Esso used for their, more expensive products). Last year I began using Gulf’s MAX and Classic. Almost identical but the metal can Classic has more zinc. Twice the price to my previous oi...

Re: v. late 3.8's
Good info, and as I suspected. But I am very pleased about the POs change as I prefer it to the later style. I find the cubby box in the way when changing gears, and I love the alu panels.

Re: v. late 3.8's
881583 is correct. Why do you mention another number? I can show you the Her Cert as well as pictures of frame and chassis plate/plaque I think other details suggest an earlier car. Bought it 15 yrs ago in Germany. Had come from the US in the 90s. The seats have that correct red colour rather than s...

Re: v. late 3.8's
This is interesting! My 3,8 (881583) was built on March 22nd 1964, yet it has what looks like an original alu panelled interior. I have always assumed that a later US owner changed from black/leather to alu panels, but who knows...? I prefer the early alu panels, and I find the cubby box in the way ...

Re: Gearbox breather
This makes me wonder if my all synchro box, installed after overhaul in an XK 150, has a clogged breather which causes the box to leak quite badly.

Re: Noise in the front at very low speeds on a pothole or speed bump
Many good thoughts. Thank you. The spinners are the original, but refurbished. The garage guy did mention the bonnet hinge, but we didn´t explore further. The front right wheel bearing is a tiny bit loose. But moving to the next hole, for the locking pin, might make it too tight. I will pursue the b...

Noise in the front at very low speeds on a pothole or speed bump
It has gotten worse, louder and more often. Almost always on the left side. Ball joints, steering rack and torsion bars seem ok. I reduced tyre pressure from 2,2 to 1,9 in the 205 XWX, but this didn´t help much. Where shall I continue to search? (everything is in very good condition, and a very good...

Agreed. I had a rattle between 1600-2200. Tightening the upper chain sorted that problem.

Fuel gauge with moving needle
What can cause the gauge/needle to move between E and F very slowly? I filled the tank, which was reading empty, but would only take about 1/4. The needle remained at E. I tapped the glass, but unlike another Jaguar, where this will send the needle to the correct level ver fast, this gaugeś needle m...

Re: direction indicator: left one does not blink
I seem to have a closely related problem on the 3rd ladt 420G, sold new in Belgium with the Hazard warning light accessory. When activating the right blinker, the small front repeater, on the left side also blinks, but not the main left blinker. The 2 on the front right, and the rear right blink as ...

Re: Tremec 5 Speed box V12
I just got a 420G back from CMC, where they fitted a T-5 supplied by Elite transmissions. It makes a terrible noise on 5th. Screetching, cutting sort of noise. I ave only driven it 3-4 times and only short moments in 5th. They claim not to have noticed anything, but I don´t think they did any motorw...

Re: OT - Vibration and crankshaft damper on Mark IX
How did the story finish Christopher?
I have a wobbling damper on a 120, and yesterday looked at Rob Beere´ s alternative to the stock item.
Can the damper be replaced from the front/oitside, or does it involve a lot more work?

Any particularly good products, new or old, that are highly recommended?

Re: Lower timing chain noise
I just read this thread twice, as I have the same issue on an XK140 with a rebuilt engine. Rattling noise between 1700-2200, whether driving or revving a parked car. No difference on hot or cold engine (perhaps less noise with cold engine). I have tried locating the noise with my stetoscope. No imme...
