Re: Cooling fan

Hi Phil, I used a toggle switch to earth the otter at the radiator. I ran long wires down the frame to the otter switch wiring and hooked the two wires in to that circuit so that should the toggle switch be activated, it would operate the fan relay in the normal manner. So, no power going to my swit...

Re: Paint shop recommendations

Great, thanks Simon. I will give them a bell, they are not far away at all so that’s great.

Paint shop recommendations

Hi everyone, I was wondering if anyone might be able to recommend a paint shop in the Leicestershire/Warwickshire area, I am looking for someone that would be able to do a bit of lead work and correct some of my less than desirable results! I would call budget a few thousand so I know won’t necessar...

Re: Cooling fan

I have just fitted the twin coolcat fans and they are absolutely brilliant. With previous original fans my cars temp would be fine on the move but would creep up in traffic or parking up/traffic lights. I have also fitted an override and (quite neatly I think) tucked a toggle switch under the dash. ...

Re: Series 1 2+2 values

It strikes me there are so many differences. My car is 1E75791 (original on this post) so falls just before the catagory of having factory fitted open headlights. However when I imported it I recall it also had, toggle dash, polished camcovers BUT a series 2 rad with twin fan. Odd, but I understand ...

Re: Tappet/timing chain noise

Had a better look at this today. I have replaced the follower for a new one. The one that came out was the long skirt type, which annoyingly means going down the route of refitting all long skirt type followers (which I read can be good at quietening the tappet noise) is probably not worth doing. Th...

Re: Tappet/timing chain noise

Hi chris, Yes you are quite right on the shape, il take the cam cover off for a better shot. It’s like the lobe has been striking the follower at a partial angle. The follower rotates freely and I cannot feel any play side to side. I also cannot see any evidence of marks on the guide or the lobe. I ...

Tappet/timing chain noise

Hi all, Having had the cylinder head shimmed I have since been driving for 50 miles or so and am noticing an improvment in tappet noise but it is still not as quiet as I expect it should be. The noise seems to be intermittent depending on rpm, and i would say is quieter when engine warm. The noise I...

Re: Headlight wiring and relay

Have now isolated to the external bulbs and will check the 10 pin connector for any issues. No issues with the relay, works nicely now and dims the rear screen light as it should.

Re: Headlight wiring and relay

Thanks Julian for your detailed advice! I had no idea a bulb would give such low readings so i understand what you are saying. I will test again without the bulbs in and see what I get! Also another relay is on order - still doesn’t seem right that the relay would stop clicking at the same time my s...

Re: Headlight wiring and relay

Thanks Julian, I have been observing the fuse when switching and although it is not blowing I’m pretty sure it will do. What confuses me - with the fuse out, one side of the fuse (the red circuit wires) has a resistance to earth of 1.5 ohms, not a lot I know but not a short circuit either. So can I ...

Re: Headlight wiring and relay

Thanks David - I now think this relay is for the heated rear screen, but it just incorporates the 12v feed from fuse 5. Question is if that relay were to not opperate properly would there be an impact to the current at the fusebox I suppose no harm in changing it anyway seen as i know it used to cli...

Re: Headlight wiring and heated rear screen relay

Hi Simon, I can confirm I do have that fuse setup, the only fuse affecting the feed is fuse 5 (the red wires and side/panel lights as you say). As far as I can tell this is the same feed that goes to W1 on the relay and should activate it because it does get 12v, but I am not hearing the click of th...

Headlight wiring and relay

Hi everyone, I switched my headlamps on to do a bit of adjusting of the alignment last night and watched a fuse blow via a bit of smoke through the top of the dash 😩 Investigated this morning and it would seem that the relay that I’m convinced used to click over quite nicely is now no longer doing s...

Re: Head stud suspicious thread

All sorted, thanks for the advise, helicoil did the trick and did it myself with the help of a borrowed electro magnetic base drill, although probably overkill was perfect for the job. Head now torqued up properly and no leaks at all. Took the opportunity to re shim the head whilst off also. Robert

Re: Head stud suspicious thread

Thanks seems right enough. I believe the cause of the issue was that the dome nut had basically got to the point where it was tight on and not turning anymore at which point it stopped and the stud started turning and so rather than clamping and torqueing up the stud just turned - results is probabl...

Re: Head stud suspicious thread

Thanks Andrew. Coming to terms with the thought of dismantling everything is a bit painful. Trying to read up if it is indeed 100% the case that the dowel stud doesn’t pull through the head, would hate to dismantle then find it’s not the case - mind you even a new stud would probably not make any di...
