Re: Series 3, go on persuade me!

No real idea on budget just yet. I will study the market, but its fair to say that I have the time to work on a car myself and prefer working on my own cars. I tend to bond with a car if I have restored it, where as I dont if its a car that someone else has done. Really, I would like a nice rot free...

Re: Series 3, go on persuade me!

I like my Getrag...... Seriously though Andrew, I can't compare a Series 3 V12 to a Six cylinder E, 'cos I haven't driven one. My car is standard apart from the Getrag and uprated cooling (aluminium radiator, modern fans and extra relays - works really well even in 40 degree C temperatures). I find...

Re: Series 3, go on persuade me!

Hi Andrew, I think there might have been a slight mix up between posts with jagwit! Yes, my car was bought from Eagle but restored by M&C Wilkinson. Fitted with the last factory fresh 6.0 litre engine, fuel injection, AJ6 Throttle larger body kit and special TT exhaust. Power between 375 and 400 bh...

Re: Series 3, go on persuade me!

thanks for the pointers. If I am being completely honest with myself, I still yearn to buy back the lavender car. I have been searching for it for 7 years and now I have found it its a bit frustrating to be in the ownership of a property multi millionaire who doesn't use it. He didnt show any real i...

Re: Series 3, go on persuade me!

Wow, thats a nice looking set up. Judging from the photos, its an Eagle supplied car? Did you say that the original engine was retained and the fuel injection was form a later car?

Re: Series 3, go on persuade me!

thanks Barry. Was it this V12 behind the Series Two? http://i714.photobucket.com/albums/ww149/vanquishspirit/IMG_5030.jpg and this is the car I really want to buy back as I was the second owner and my XJ12 was owned by the same family. Not overly keen on Lavender but colour is not relevant in this c...

Re: Series 3, go on persuade me!

Thank you everyone that responded to help me with this. There is clearly a lot of love for the V12 out there, and why not. I have always liked the look of the car, and I recall seeing my first one. Back then as a youngster (13) the early Series Cars looked vaguely old fashioned on their spindly whee...

Re: Series 3, go on persuade me!

Dear Andrew, You'll get 11mpg day and night out of an automatic US spec v12 and you can get up to 17mpg form a UK spec manual v12. A fuel injected car can do better than that - in theory I think 22-23mpg is possible with a proper mapped ignition to boot. If you want to discuss every possible type o...

Re: early series 1 chassis numbers

I am as guilty as the next man, but it does interest me the psychology of collectors. We all want something a little rarer ( more hard to get ) than the next man , even thought its probably not more desirable. I would love an outside bonnet lock car, although when I had a flat floor I disliked it as...

Series 3, go on persuade me!

I am a proud owner of a series One 3.8 and fully restored it, the thread is under restorations 860897. I have been looking for a 3.8 Roadster to restore but have temporarily given up due to the cost of candidates and have started to focus on the V12. I should say that I have owned 3 V12s in total, b...

Re: Torsion bar reaction plate

reference the screeching noise, could it be the spigot bush in the flywheel spinning, quite likely to be the front bearing in the box though I would have thought.

Re: Torsion bar reaction plate

Indeed, I had my flywheel drilled to accept the 9.5 diaphragm clutch . Cannot recall who it was that did the job for me now, but clearly needs to be done by an engineering company . Sent you a PM Alan.

I just ran the video, and reckon the movement is far to large.

Re: Not having a good day...

I picked up a crankshaft for £100 which didnt need grinding and has worked perfectly! Hugo comments about not ruining anything else that is not already ruined is not really a very good recommendation . If there is steel swarf rather than white metal running around the engine, all manor of damage cou...

Re: Not having a good day...

By the way, how did you 'find' this? It's not sort of thing you would expect to stumble across by chance ;) It actually looks like one of those hidden nasties that would keep running without giving any symptoms, but presumably it wasn't? `Thats what I asked Hugo...you need to read the posts properl...

Re: Not having a good day...

Oh dear I feel for you. What a shame. I fear that you will be having to take the engine out for this one. What made you strip it down and have you checked the other big ends? I assume it was knocking? Are the grooves in the journal or just the shell? It may have picked up for some reason and its jus...
