Re: Over torqued head nuts

Corrected my post, I'd previously used the wrong values for yield and ultimate stresses for bolts. So Jaguars spec is only 70% of yield, i.e. not "torque-to-yield". As I added, crazy waste to replace these studs, imo.

Re: Over torqued head nuts

Crazy waste to change these studs imo, if they are otherwise in good condition ... By my calcs 58 lb.ft torque will load a slightly lubricated (K=1.5) 7/16 unf grade 8 stud to 70% of its nominal yield strength (896 MPa). So 85 lb.ft would have momentarily caused 102% of yield strength. So what? Note...

Re: Over torqued head nuts

I’d go one step less, leave as is, 58 lb-ft, wouldn’t even change the head gasket. By torquing to 85 lb-ft you have proven your studs are still good and strong. You will not have stretched them, it would take a lot more than that. In any case, believe it or not, it wouldn’t matter if you had. Stretc...

Then, a vacuum gauge should show if there is a leak. What car is it, what state is the positive crankcase ventilation, might this be allowing in air?

Re: IRS mounts

Ok, it would be great to be able to share what it is costing to develop this thing, I’ll make them as cheaply as I can, happy for any suggestions. Kit could comprise eight of the plates, four of the bolts and two auxiliary blocks for use during compression. The plates were 3D modelled, different arr...

Here is my solution to the IRS mounting issue, applicable to all Jaguar IRS's, not just e-types: https://i.postimg.cc/sfYD9mXp/IMG-20240216-193606.jpg Instead of trying to compress the mounts while installing the IRS, the mounts can be pre compressed and these small plates used to hold this compress...

Re: Needles for SU carb conversion

One problem with lean mixtures is that the unburnt oxygen tends to combine with nitrogen to form nitrogen oxides, causing smog, acid rain and ozone depletion. Another problem is that there is nothing to be gained by doing this. As example consider a 6 litre engine with AFR 15.5:1 ticking over at 240...

Next time consider using an endoscope that plugs in to your phone (camera). Attach the camera end to a block of wood that you can move around on the floor until the timing marks are in focus. The timing light similarly mounted. Place yr phone (display) next to the distributor ...

Another thing to try: Driving with the boot unlatched, the slipstream holds the boot lid partially open. Supporting and fixing the lid in this positon, what does that do to yr wool?
Have you tried wool on any other car , is it any different?

Re: Smell in cockpit of S3 OTS

So - if somebody does have an answer - pls put me out my misery... Sorry Tim no answer, only questions: Did you try blocking the openings that connect the boot to the rear of the cockpit? Did you try temporarily sealing the boot by taping over the boot lid gap? My theory is that if we can stop the ...

Just down the road … As per Marek and Phil, yr issues are not due to the type of the distributor but may be due to the distributor’s condition. May be due to a whole lot of other things as well and more than just one... To eliminate the distributor as a possible cause, I could lend you one (XJS, vac...

Ah yes, the detachable seatbelt anchors. Just remember to under no circumstances use the anticlockwise spiral bolt on the opposite side, unless the keyhole spring is inverted. Otherwise you may as well just disregard completely.

I asked JLR about the original design, they provided the following drawing extract: https://i.postimg.cc/ZR3RkJFW/Image-2023-12-11-11-34-29.png JLR could read that it was last updated in 1974, they don’t know what this change was.
