Re: Ignition issue on my serie 3 1972

Hi Marek, thanks for your feeback. I found a slot yesterday night to make further tests: -I tested the resistor ballast as per manual and all resistances are within specification - I checked/cleaned all connections and i found out that one connection on the ballast resistor was suspicious. .Then i c...

Re: Black smoke Series 3 2+2

David, the ported vaccum i was refering to is the vaccum port that must be drilled on the rear left hand side carburator. So if i understand correctly what you suggest: - I fit the advance vaccum unit JLM519 on my current ditributor unit to retplace the retard unit currenty fitted - I connect the va...

Re: Black smoke Series 3 2+2

Thanks Philip,

i have just ordered the vaccum unit from SNG and will fit this directly on my OPUC unit which is working well so far.
Regarding vaccum source i thought it should be coming from a ported one from the rear left hand side carb (to drilled) and not from the inlet manifold?

Re: Black smoke Series 3 2+2

Philipp,

1) no i have a retard vaccum unit that i have disconnected.
2) i have the original ignition system

My plan moving forward is to install an advance vaccum unit on my current distributor. Does it make sense or should i go for an OPUS ignition unit? with a vaccum advance unit?

regards

Re: Black smoke Series 3 2+2

Dear all, many thanks again for your support and i can say now the issue is sorted. Philipp, you were right it was the choke mecanism which was 180° wrong. It's a pitty that it took me that long as it was so obvious but i have actually disassemble the carbs includint the choke mechanism many time bu...

Re: Black smoke Series 3 2+2

Philip,

yes they are in the right direction.
I have 2 spares carb therefore i'll rebuilt them... we never know.
I'll also check again all pipes especially teh one related to emission control.
BTW, do you think the check valve or gulp valves might influence my issues?
Thanks

Re: Black smoke Series 3 2+2

Marek, ok thanks. This mark on the pulley seems original and is only few degres away form the A's and seems to be original. By the way looking at the repain Manual page 43 for example you can also see the B mark on the pulley. Named this B is quite confusing too. I thought this might explain my smok...

Re: Black smoke Series 3 2+2

Marek, thanks for your reply and this was my understanding when i set the timing when i rebuilt the engine. As of now the engine timing is set as when the A mark on Crankshaft pulley is at 0° the tool fit in the slot of both camshafts (Band A and B). Nevertheless since i have the issues mentionned e...

Re: Black smoke Series 3 2+2

Hi all, i finally took some time to remove emission control pipes, the left hand side carburators, inlet manifolds,.... to access the camshaft and see if my camshaft timing was ok or not. I have once stupid question: as i m checking band B timing should the bottom pulley be with the B mark at 0 degr...

Re: Black smoke Series 3 2+2

Thanks for you valuable feedback. Marek, sorry of my description was not complete enough but yes i have already control few times if the carburettor linkages was well balanced and set and i have also "try" to synchronized the carb (air flow first and then mixture) as best as possible. Re: Black smoke Series 3 2+2

Dear all, since my last post i have remove the carbs once more and review the float height setting, choke assembly, i changed all needles,.... and i did not find anything strange in the carburettors that could explain the issue. My Fuel pump has been reworked and the pressure is in line with require...

Re: Black smoke Series 3 2+2

Hi, sorry for not getting back earlier but i could not do the tests as i have faced a fuel pump failure and i just received the parts to rework the pump this week. I'm just wondering if my smoke issue could not be linked to the fuem pump!? I explain my reasoning: when i disassemble the pump i found ...

Re: Black smoke Series 3 2+2

Peter, Philip, thanks for your idea, i'll do it and let you know. I have already check the choke disc and looked ok to me but did not have any drawing to compare. I'll do it. In parallel i have found 2 second hand Carb that i'll rework and swap them with my current one if i do not have any improveme...

Ole,

thanks. I forgot to mention it but yes i have already checked that the ckoke was not stuck on that bank and it's not. There is only 1 carb which has a choke.
