engine sealants

Hi all, during the rebuild of the V12 I obviously want to avoid leaks and use some type of sealants. The areas in question are: - liners to block (Loctite 574) - head gasket (yes, there are recommendations using sealant there, eg Beere VHT gasket cement) - general sealant in addition to paper gasket...

timing chain guides adjustment

Hi all, after having traced water ingress (liners), it was decided to rebuild the engine. Now I am about to start the assembly. My first question (of quite a few to come I suppose) is: timing chain guides adjustment: the special tool from Rob Beere is rather expensive - is there another way to adjus...

Re: water oil emulsion

Dear Marek and Andrew, thank you for you in depht support! Coolant seemed very good and fresh with no crud visible in the system parts I drained /checked. So I'll have the heads cleaned, checked and slightly skimmed, lap the valves, adjust clearance and refit with new gaskets - and hope for the best...

Re: water oil emulsion

Thank you all for your input, yesterday I drained the sump and it was completely contaminated as well. I took off the oil cooler, contaminated but no visible cracks, though I have to thoroughly clean it and have a second look. The distributor was completely dry. I was told that the car was bought si...

Re: water oil emulsion

Thank you, I have to admit that I havent seen defective V12 gaskets yet, maybe the are not ok, so here are photos (top and bottom sides) https://i.postimg.cc/J0kyCqqQ/image3167.jpg https://i.postimg.cc/QNwn3JsK/image3168.jpg Marek, regarding the distributor, sorry for the silly queston (I am working...

water oil emulsion

Hi all, a friend brought his 74 V12 roadster to check the valve clearance. When removing the cam covers I found a beige water/oil emulsion instead of engine oil. https://i.postimg.cc/V6jqFjGK/image2986.jpg I was advised to renew the head gaskets and pulled the heads but nothing seems to be wrong wit...

Quite a lot of other details obviously not correct, maybe nothing serious, but probably not worth the money in this condition.

Re: 61 OTS in the stable

I'd get the capillary Smiths lookalike gauge sold by the usuals (I got mine from Merlin Motorsports) - reliable, and if you change over the dial face, it looks like original. If you want to stay completely original, temporarily check real vs indicated pressure: install a t-piece at the block and con...

Re: Electric power steering

I have installed the EZ power steering in my S1 E type several years ago, and it certainly helps with low speed maneuvers... I did my own install and found it impossible to get the steering column (the upper section of which is replaced by the EZ unit) mounted fully in the "up" position, which is w...

spark plug equivalent

Hi all, I was just checking a cross reference table Champion - NGK. For the 3.8 's Champion N5 the table gives as equivalent NGK B 6 ES. I currently use a BP 6 ES, which has a longer protruding centre electrode (code P), so is quite different. What does that do to the engine and the combustion? Any ...

Re: Problem with SU No.2 !

Did the car run well with the strombergs? Start trying to get a good idle. I assume that valve clearence is ok and there are no manifold leaks (if you are not sure about brake servo, blank off). Make sure that ignition timing is around 10 btc static. Jets approx 1,6mm down from the bridge, float lev...

Wow, what a story and how much knowledge on the forum! But I wonder how many times Jaguar asked themselves what mess they had with just Etype columns at that time.

I run mine with 0,042 down the bridge, sounds you have a massive air leak, maybe the brake vacuum tank check valve

Re: Tyres advice please.

There was a comparison done by a magazine (Autobild Klassik) some time ago, albeit with a Healey. Avon and Blockley were below par. I can confirm that my Avons were no good on wet surfaces. Dunlop was top in this test. Vredestein and Dunlop are almost half the price of Pirelli and Michelin. I bought...

Tim, I got good results with 42thou on the 3.8 ( both UM and UE needle-most have same diameters at idle), and 61thou on the 4.2. You must not underestimate even slightly worn spindle bushes; you can fit neoprene seals from Burlen, but the discs wont close really tight (at least not all the time), ma...

Re: Sticky choke

I assume your car is equipped with SU carbs, then it is worth checking if one of the fast idle rods has got stuck in the carb body.
