That "white gunk" is probably heat sink compound to get a good thermal contact between the component and the metal casing thus helping keep the component from overheating.

Yes, I agree with Marek. I had this exact problem on my TR6 last weekend. Changing over the electrical component worked (luckily I just happened to have one that's been in a drawer for 25 years), and I was back in business.
