Re: pre-programmed curves on 123 ignition - help please?

My readings off the crankshaft are all with a standard timing light, not a dial back light. That adds an extra dimension, and potential confusion. Basically the advance measured on the crank pulley at any given time is the actual advance value the engine is experiencing at that point. The difference...

Re: pre-programmed curves on 123 ignition - help please?

Yes, your summary is correct. I picked 10 degrees as a figure for the test as it was an easy test and the distributor was already installed at 10 degrees. I haven’t settled on the exact advance value I want at idle yet, there’s probably another round of checking the carbs, then checking if more or l...

Re: pre-programmed curves on 123 ignition - help please?

Hi John. I did some experimentation yesterday. I have my distributor installed at 10 degrees and I tried with zero degrees programmed in the curve at idle on the app. With the “Static Advance” setting on the curve set to 10 degrees, and the “include static advance” the dashboard shows 10 degrees at ...

Re: pre-programmed curves on 123 ignition - help please?

I’ve just updated the 123 app on my phone. I can’t remember when I last updated it, so don’t know when this came in but it looks like there’s now a function to add a static advance value in the app. This would appear to solve the problems we’ve been discussing related to whether the distributor shou...

Re: WARNING…BE CAREFUL!!

That’s not the issue. Because the E-type clutch fork pivots and the release bearing end moved through an arc, the release bearing is only concentric with the clutch at a maximum of two points throughout the clutch travel. This isn’t a problem with a carbon release bearing. However, with the roller b...

Re: pre-programmed curves on 123 ignition - help please?

From the data in the 3.8 workshop manual, the original mechanical distributor doesn’t apply and advance below 650 rpm, and the idle speed is 500rpm. So timing at cranking is also 10 degrees.

Re: pre-programmed curves on 123 ignition - help please?

Hi John, You’ve confirmed what I thought was happening then. I’ve not had a chance to do any more tests yet, but I think I may have to leave it installed at 10 degrees. I was expecting the engine to be easier to start with lower advance at cranking. Whilst it is easy to get it to start, it’s not eas...

Re: pre-programmed curves on 123 ignition - help please?

Sorry, I missed the comment about the choke. It’s not sensible to connect the choke on Webers. Apparently they’re not particularly reliable, and if used regularly can lease to either air leaks or fuel leaks. Not every model of weber comes with them, and blanking kits are available to remove those th...

Re: pre-programmed curves on 123 ignition - help please?

I plotted all the curves for the pre-programmed Jag 123 fr the workshop manual. They each have a start point, mid point and end point, but it turns out the mid point is just a point half way between the start and end points. So each curve is actually a straight line. When overlayed over the original...

Re: pre-programmed curves on 123 ignition - help please?

The car is on Webers because that’s what the previous owner fitted in place of the original Stromberg setup. If it were on SUs, I likely wouldn’t replace them with Webers, but I’m not about to swap the Webers for SUs. Apart from a tubular exhaust manifold, sports exhaust and the 123 distributor I th...

Re: pre-programmed curves on 123 ignition - help please?

The car idles smoothly at around 750rpm when it’s warm. When it’s cold it idles lower as there’s no mechanism on the Weber carbs to increase the idle speed. If I increase the slow speed running setting, it will increase the RPM at both hot and cold idle. I’ll also start exposing the progression hole...

Re: pre-programmed curves on 123 ignition - help please?

John, how easy is the car to start with the static timing set at TDC and all the timing at idle added in the app? The reason I ask is I’ve recently swapped my pre-programmed 123 for the Bluetooth tube version and initially I set it at TDC and added the idle timing value into the app. The problem is ...

Re: webber carb install.

I had to make some simple bits to get mine to work using a mix of what came with the carbs and the original linkage. The original bar that runs horizontally across the bulkhead connected to the actuator lever that came with the carb linkage, but I needed to make a pivot to support the end of the rod...

Re: 1965 COUPE STOCK REAR SPRINGS AND SHOCKS NOT SNG

Agreed, a lot of miss information there. I think most of us agree, but for clarity, there are three things combined that go together to make up the rear ride height on an E-type. 1. The distance from the top eyelet to the top spring perch. 2. The laden length of the spring 3. The distance from the b...

Re: 1965 COUPE STOCK REAR SPRINGS AND SHOCKS NOT SNG

Rear dampers do affect ride height as they’re coil overs. Specifically the relationship between the spring seats and the eyelets needs to be correct. It’s the same principle as using adjustable platform dampers to adjust the ride height.

Re: Series 2 Steering Column question

I should add to this that even if you do shear the nylon and try to dismantle it, it won’t come apart. I once had one that was broken and tried to dismantle it to see if it was possible to fix. It looks like it’s assembled by posting the inner bit in from the other end of the outer, then welding a p...

Re: Series 2 Steering Column question

The lower column is in two haves so it’s able to collapse in the event of an accident. It can’t be separated into two halves. It’s held together by nylon shear pins. If you try and dismantle it, you’ll break the nylon. As far as I know, no one’s able to replicate the original manufacturing process a...

Re: DCOE equipped E-Type popping and farting excessively

You can get closer to identify the correct advance curve with some experimentation. However, it does come with some risk that if you get it wrong and add too much you can damage the engine. You have 16 curves to pick from, and can also move the static timing, so there is some scope for adjustment bu...

Re: DCOE equipped E-Type popping and farting excessively

Engines fitted with Webers can benefit from more advance at lower rpms, but the maximum total advance should remain the same.

How much is best determined on a rolling road or engine dyno. Whether the correct curve can be achieved with the pre-programmed 123 is another matter.

Re: DCOE equipped E-Type popping and farting excessively

Have you checked the basics are correct before pulling the engine apart or spending more money at a specialist? Float levels. Are they equal and at the correct height? They don’t necessarily come set right out of the box, and in my experience specialists don’t always check the basics before diving i...
