Re: Bonnet Panel Gaskets

Many thanks everyone, I’ll have a little rethink as to what solution I employ.

Bonnet Panel Gaskets

I’m in the final throes of putting my car back together after a bare metal respray. I’m wanting to put a rubber gasket between the centre bonnet panel and both wings to prevent the potential metal on metal rubbing (I know I’m going to have to do both edges, or parts of, due to the chrome finisher wh...

Re: High Peak Run 2019

Hi Just echoing Bob’s comments, it was my first experience of one of these events and I can heartily recommend this run to others who are thinking about attending future meetings. As my car was the roughest looking motor there, I was apprehensive but I needn’t have been as those with whom my wife an...

Re: Brake fluid in servo

I’ve answered my own question - in spite of looking at the diagram countless times, I hadn’t noticed (or read about) a small bearing assembly at the end of the pushrod which acts as a little buffer between the slave cylinder and servo. During a PO’s tenure, the assembly must have been lost which exp...

Brake fluid in servo

Hi I know there are some comments on the internet about this but I wanted to test consensus on my problem. After suffering pretty much non-working rear brakes, I took off the servo and hydraulic pushrod housing and replaced the seals with SNG’s repair kit. As per the WSM, I attempted to remove the p...

Re: Battery not charging and rev counter not working

Thanks for some good tips, Bill. I suspect we might have fried the new regulator so we’ll redo the WM test and the additional ones you’ve suggested. We’ve discovered some odd things going on behind the ignition barrel and the steering column which may be unrelated but still need to be fixed. Regards...

Re: Battery not charging and rev counter not working

Both the battery charging gauge and rev counter worked for a short while today, whilst the father-in-law was testing the voltage regulator. However, when I got there it had stopped working! The ignition bulb was, indeed, not working - it had blown. I tested the fuel warning light and it was working ...

Re: Battery not charging and rev counter not working

Hi Bill

Thanks for replying. I wonder why they both don’t work but do when I do the test? Must be coincidental then. I’ll check the ignition light when I work on the car this weekend.

Cheers

Battery not charging and rev counter not working

Having suffered with a non-charging battery and a rev counter which had stopped working, I conducted the workshop manual test to see if the problem lay with the voltage regulator or alternator. It appeared to show that the alternator was fine but the regulator (heavily corroded) wasn’t. Whilst runni...

Re: Door mirrors

Hi JC I don’t have a big problem with holes in the car though, if I could avoid having more of them, I will! If I have to drill holes, I’ll make sure they are as well-protected from rust as I can make them (which avoids using self-tapping screws which render any protection as useless). I agree, mirr...

Re: Door mirrors

Thanks for more great advice. I’ll have a ponder about drilling the door or using the Fosseway versions which don’t need it.

Thanks, Malcolm, I’d not seen those before and they seem better value than the first ones I’d purchased. I’ll investigate those further.

Door mirrors

I’ve recently bought some Tex mirrors from one of the big E Type spares retailers that purported to be for the S3. I tried to position the driver’s side and realised, after about an hour, that, unless I built out from the car to effectively tilt the top of the mirror housing away from the car, I wou...

Re: Poor brakes and warning light constantly on

Hi Bill Thanks for the advice and information. We were hoping to look at the brakes yesterday but the ignition system became more pressing as I broke down when visiting the local petrol station - we have hot starting issues which may form another thread. Just investigating the options now... Cheers ...

Poor brakes and warning light constantly on

I wonder if anyone can help diagnose a problem without my having to replace the whole system! I’ve taken out the car and the brakes have been really poor with the warning light constantly on. The rear end is jacked up and, with the engine running, when the pedal is pressed briefly the back wheels re...

Re: Ballast Resistor

Hi Rob

Yes, we’ve already bitten the bullet and done that where there are some moving parts. I’ll give the ignition system a stay of execution but it may be on borrowed time.

As for the age of the car and its bits, it doesn’t bode well for me, being over 45!! :bigrin

Re: Ballast Resistor

Hi Colin! Thanks for your reply. It has the original ignition system and I have a workshop manual but the father-in-law monopolises it so thanks for the link. We’ve got a multimeter so we’ll do the tests and definitely won’t be shelling out on a new ballast resistor unless it is absolutely necessary...

Ballast Resistor

It’s me again! I’m trying to rule out potential ignition problems and have already replaced the coil. The ballast resistor looks like it’s had some trauma with PO and looking to change it however ifs noticed that suppliers seem to have dried up. The one I’ve found is quoting £192. From experience ou...
