Re: S3 charging/alternator concerns

Thanks Bill and Marek,
Sent the alternator off for testing/repair locally. Hopefully that's all the issue is. Will update.

Many thanks,
Matt

Re: S3 V12 Stromberg/Dizzy vacuum pipes

Quick update so as not to leave the thread open; sent the entire ignition system to England for testing, the company informed me it would cost little more to renew all components so I ordered the lot and issues resolved. Thanks a million for all advice, I've learned loads about these engines in the ...

S3 charging/alternator concerns

Hi chaps, hope everyone is ok. After finally sorting out running issues (I'll update that thread shortly), on first test drive the ignition light came on and battery voltage on the voltmeter was in the red. Checked voltage with multimeter across the battery terminals = 12.xx and gradually falling. I...

Hi Colin, did you ever get to the bottom of this?

For those of you familiar with ignition scope patterns. Voltages seem alright (although no other car to compare to) but patterns seem rather erratic. Blue (primary around 240V, red (secondary around 13,500V).

Re: S3 V12 Stromberg/Dizzy vacuum pipes

Hello again all, finally had some time to pay attention to the engine again, after sorting the steering. Got a new FP valve (there wasn't one fitted before). Set static timing to 8° BTDC (due to the 95 fuel here). On the snippet in Bob's comment, it states 4°ATDC at idle but the workshop manual I ha...

Re: S3 V12 Stromberg/Dizzy vacuum pipes

Hi Matt, A few suggestions: Check the plug leads for correct firing order bearing in mind that the distributor rotates anticlockwise, A bank is on the left viewed from the driver's seat) and No1 cylinder is at the front of the engine. https://i.postimg.cc/PqTcGfVQ/Firing-Order.jpg Check that you ar...

Re: S3 V12 Stromberg/Dizzy vacuum pipes

So after going over everything over and over with a fine toothed comb, I'm still getting popping, backfiring, black smoke. It has got me thinking, is it possible the carb rebuild kit (from a carb specialist in southern UK) could have different size jets or float valves? Got the jets at 2.5mm depth, ...

Re: S3 V12 Stromberg/Dizzy vacuum pipes

Thanks all for the advice, much appreciated. One thing I'd overlooked, timing of 12° BTDC is for 97 octane fuel. Here the fuel is 95, so should be 8° BTDC. Something else i may have messed up on is the jet height. In the instructions which were included with the carb rebuild kit, it states 'the new ...

Re: S3 V12 Stromberg/Dizzy vacuum pipes

Hello again, Not had much time to work on the E type lately due to other work commitments, but now have the new dizzy cap and rotor arm fitted, vacuum pipes (hopefully) sorted, timing set to 12° BTDC (as per manual). The issue I've ran in to when balancing the carbs following the service manual proc...

Re: S3 V12 Stromberg/Dizzy vacuum pipes

Hi Simon, I can't thank you enough for your informative response. I've ordered a new dizzy cap and rotor arm as they were showing some wear, so I'll tackle the timing after they arrive. I'm still a bit puzzled over the pipes between carb bypass valves. I'm assuming they should be vacuum actuated. In...

S3 V12 Stromberg/Dizzy vacuum pipes

Hi all, My first post here and I would be extremely grateful to receive some of the wealth of knowledge evident in this forum. I'm a JLR tech here in Thailand and have recently taken on a restored 73 S3 in need of setting up. I've plenty of experience with classics but the issue here is not knowing ...
