Re: 1970 S2 E-type 4.2 2+2 clutch master cylinder
The spring is in there but doesn’t seem strong enough to return the piston so suspect that’s what needs replacing. Thanks very much Steve

1970 S2 E-type 4.2 2+2 clutch master cylinder
So I’ve another head banger. I have serviced the clutch master cylinder which is a Girling with the body stamped 308601 CC2. (Might just be the casting number.) The push rod that is fixed to the clutch pedal doesn’t seem to have anything to attach the other end to the piston. In other words the push...

Re: Brake master cylinder won’t dismantle
I had a drink and realised the gauge on my compressor goes to 20bar and I have a heavier hammer in my toolbox. The result : https://i.postimg.cc/Qx9x3vD8/9-BBF06-BE-6168-4-CB3-9-D57-3-CDA93405-E16.jpg In truth it was a case of lubricate, tap, lubricate tap and repeat. The comments on this forum conf...

Re: Brake master cylinder won’t dismantle
I’ve had two nights sleep on it. This is the third day of trying.
Just tried a ring spanner on the piston then cabletie and circlip and tapped that. Didn’t work and has marked the piston a bit so won’t try that again.
So the only thing left is to try the drink.
Cheers chaps

Re: Brake master cylinder won’t dismantle
Yes tried with pressure and tapping a spanner on the piston at tHe same time. I had the compressor up to 10bar with a tube held into the cylinder by hand internal cylinder pressure wouldn’t have been 10. Think I’ll fashion a tapped attachment to directly pressure the cylinder and try that. Will get ...

Re: Brake master cylinder won’t dismantle
Thanks Michel. Can’t find any sign of a stop pin. In the KB for S2 brakes there’s this diagram which I presume is originally from Jaguar as it’s in all my manuals: https://i.postimg.cc/NjFYs8Px/6-EC3-B5-E6-72-B2-4-F10-BCC6-5-DAD886-F54-CD.png I can’t see a stop pin here either and it seems to confor...

Brake master cylinder won’t dismantle
So I’m rebuilding the brake system on a 1970 S2 2+2 4.2 I’ve removed the master cylinder and started dismantling but I can’t get out the main piston, bearing or plastic cover. I’ve removed the circlip and the books I have (Autobooks, Haynes & Bob Bate) say the piston should just pull out but I’ve tr...

Re: Sealant for inlet manifold gasket?
Thanks Keith, Andrew and Peter all very useful. I’ll give her hermetite a go.
Keith - glad you got it sealed. Those sorts of issues can often take a while to do because it’s not such as small job.

Re: Sealant for inlet manifold gasket?
Thanks for the answer. You really think better than the other sealants?
Couldn’t you also say the same about the head gasket but I’d be surprised if silicone is used there by many people.

Re: Sealant for inlet manifold gasket?
Soooo after posting this the “similar topics” part came up with much better results than my forum searches (I was too focused on the inlet manifold, not general gaskets). Recommendations on the forums include: Blue Hylomar Aerograde Hylomar Wellseal Three Bond 1215 With “Hylomar” being mentioned he ...

Sealant for inlet manifold gasket?
I’m replacing the inlet manifold gasket.
The removed one seems to have some kind of sealant on it.
Does anyone have a recommendation of what type of sealant to use?
Should it be used on one or both sides?
This is for a 1970 S2 2+2.
Thanks

Re: Replace fuel line banjo - epoxy resin?
Thanks both. Well it didn’t come off with a blowtorch - we had to put an electric flame on it. It made me think it must be something other than plumbers solder. But the torch is a bit old so I’m not sure it was at normal temp. The joys of winding up a mothballed workshop with old equipment. I’ll tak...

Re: Cutting a rear brake inspection / access plate
So I managed to find the article discussing cutting an access to the handbrake adjuster. It advocates replacing the handbrake self adjuster with the earlier manual adjuster and cutting an access panel. I’m considering it but don’t like the fact it’s not correct for the S2. Does anyone know if brake ...

Re: Replace fuel line banjo - epoxy resin?
Sorry to ask such as basic question but it’s been a while since I worked on this engine. Any pointers much appreciated as it seems to be a gap in the books I have.

Re: Replace fuel line banjo - epoxy resin?
I can’t seem to find in any manuals whether the banjo should be soldered on or needs welding in with aluminium rod. What’s he best way to attach the banjo to the fuel line? (Which I assume is aluminium given its weight and malleablity). Thanks for your help

Re: Replace fuel line banjo - epoxy resin?
Well argued Marek - all good points - and thanks Steve. The banjo is back in the post to the supplier and I’ll get a brass one to solder on.

Replace fuel line banjo - epoxy resin?
We need to replace one of the three banjos on the fuel supply line to the carbs on our S2 4.2l 1970 2+2. We used an electric flame to unsolder the existing from the pipe. I had to purchase a new banjo from ebay as SG Barrat didn't have the carb banjo - they only have the pump and filter banjos - and...

Re: Cutting a rear brake inspection / access plate
Thanks Steve, Andrew, Bill. Very good to see the work. I’ll do some investigation and decide then. My father (Barry) usually a sticker for authenticity has apparently been scarred too much by the self adjusting handbrake and is recommending cutting the S1 access in the S2. Yes dropping the IRS is da...

Re: Cutting a rear brake inspection / access plate
Thanks Steve. I remember these but don’t remember them giving access to the rear brakes - do you know if they do?
I seem to remember it was a modification for access through the boot floor. That may have been for the handbrake calliper. It was a long time ago so I may be misremembering.
